JERRY EDWARD POWELL (Age 81)
Died Thursday, May 2, 2013 at his home. Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward Robert Powell and Ethel Marguerite Boswell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, in 2012. He is survived by his son, Glenn Norman Powell of Sacramento, CA and his daughter, Lisa Ellen Powell of Reston, VA. Also surviving are three grandchildren, John Wesley Powell, Charles Ray Durbin V and Daniel Edward Kates, and two nieces, Pamela Powell McWhirt and Patricia Powell Westcott, and a multitude of friends. Mr. Powell was a graduate of Eastern High School in Washington, DC. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, he attended the University of Maryland and then began his lifelong career as a mechanical engineer. He was a Lay Leader of the Community Church of Ocean Pines, a board member of the Kiwanis Club, belonged to the Ocean Pines Boat Club, and was a committed volunteer at the Berlin Senior Center serving Meals on Wheels in the Berlin community. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Worcester County "Maryland's Most Beautiful People" Volunteer Award. Jerry was known for his witty sense of humor and his charming good looks. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 17, at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Ocean Pines. Rev. Bill Sterling will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Gardens of the Pines Columbarium. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Jerry's name to Kiwanis Foundation, c/o Mark Page, 8 Sandy Circle, Ocean Pines, MD, 21811.
