Joan Barkley Whitescarver, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2024, surrounded by her family at her home in Ashby Ponds Erickson Senior Living in Ashburn, VA. Joan was born December 5, 1934, in Washington, DC to the late Latimer and Carolyn Barkley. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband James Field Whitescarver Jr. in 1994. Joan is survived by her three children James F. Whitescarver III and his wife Michelle of Herndon, VA, Carolyn L. Whitescarver of Ashburn, VA, and Douglas E. Whitescarver and his wife Nora of Bethesda, MD; grandchildren, Ryan, Colin, Ashley, Eric and Marta; and brother Frank L Barkley and wife Martha, and nephew Matthew Barkley.
Joan grew up in Washington, DC and attended The National Cathedral School for Girls. She was very involved in many extra-curricular activities including Glee club, tennis, book club editor, choir, piano, ballet and dance. She was a beautiful debutante, a top Honor Roll student, and a long-time loyal fan of the Washington Redskins football team, attending many games with her father. She graduated from Penn State University and served as President of her sorority Delta Zeta. Always one to stay very active and make new friends, upon graduation she became a traveling counselor with Delta Zeta. Joan started her career at Pepco Electric Company, consulting homeowners on proper lighting. She soon found her calling and great success in sales. She first sold table pads and World Book Encyclopedias, and then would realize her passion as a real estate agent serving the Chapel Square community in Annandale and the surrounding Northern VA area. Joan became a Life Member NVAR Top Producer and Multi-Million Dollar Sales Club member real estate agent and had a reputation for being professional, hardworking, kind and caring while creating success for her clients in a 35-year career with Coldwell Banker Stevens Residential until her retirement in 2009.
Joan wed the love of her life James Field Whitescarver Jr. on June 25, 1960. Joan and Jim raised their children in the Chapel Square community, Annandale, VA. When friends and family describe Joan's attributes and passions, they will share that Joan was known for her elegant beauty, classy dress style, kindness, inner strength, modesty, intelligence, work ethic, nonstop energy, sports enthusiasm, joyfulness, and infectious smile. She loved gardening, was a proud American, a faithful Christian, and provided an abundance of unconditional love and support to her family.
Joan's Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024, Visitation at 10 a.m.; Service 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Visitation 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; at Community Church, 19790 Ashburn Road, Ashburn, VA 20147.
