I knew John Donelson as a scout in Troop 2 in Chattanooga, the McCallie School and First Presbyterian Church. I was Senior Patrol Leader, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and one of the two first Eagle Explorer Scouts since 1940 due to WWII. It had been a super troop. Along with Eagle Paul Smith, Scoutmasters Rocky Young and Bob Venable,we resurrected the troop.John was an elected patrol leader and one of our top recruits. He was outstanding in his leadership, a fun, fine friendly guy. Along with Dean Smith and Franklin D. Moore we had a ball on crazy camping trips to Sittin's Gorge, a place of mad canyons, now Cloudland State Park, NW Georgia.

I am not surprised at John's later accomplishments. I was three years older and saw little of him once I was off to U. Tenn. and U. Va. John was a fine friend who left a great impact and will be missed. We both worked in similar fields. May God rest his soul and bless his family. XP Walt W. Dear Janice,
I never met John but was well aware of him because I am also a Donelson descendant and have been heavily involved in Donelson research. I am so sorry for your loss. He sounds like a lovely person, someone I would have enjoyed knowing. May the good Lord surround you with His comfort at this difficult time.

Dear Janice,
Although I've known of you since 1962, we have never met. I am Gail's friend, Jane, who, with my husband and our toddlers, became her surrogate family when she moved to Charlotte where we lived, so I feel that I have known you for a very long time.
A friend in Nashville mailed me your husband's obituary from the newspaper and I am writing to express my condolences to you and your family.
Your John was certainly a remarkable human being and you and yours have suffered a great loss. How blessed you were to have shared many years with such an interesting man!
Please know that I am thinking of you and sending you my warmest wishes and my sympathy.
With affection, Jane Swicegood

Dear Janice and family,
We are so shocked at this sad news and our prayers and thoughts go to you and yours. John was a smart, witty (an understatement), kind, and gracious man. We fondly remember the times we shared with you at Cleveland Hall, John chasing the dogs, and our dinners out in Nashville. We hope that we may catch up with you Janice; you are a treasure as well!

Mrs Donalson and family. You do not know me but John and I were good friends at Dickinson Jr. High in Chattanooga and in the Scout Troop at First Presbyterian Church on McCallie Ave. I was notified by email from the Dickinson Alumni and was deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. We had many wonderful experiences together and just last week I sent an email to John to try to establish a connection. Sadly, I now know that it was too late. I have fondly remembered John and wish we had never lost contact.

I was a year older than John and could drive before him and we took my Dad's Oldsmobile on many camping trips and went with Walt Layson in Walt's Jeepster.
I had told my wife, also named Janice, about John andd wished we had reconnected sooner.
Our sincerest wisher and prayers for you and your family.

Dear Janice, and Susan, John, and Brendon,

We have been remembering how we met you at Unity--20+ years ago! Of course, we fell in love with you three beautiful children. And Jim says: I'm sure we fell in love with Janice first--like, immediately--and then, very quickly, with John.

Who didn't love talking with John? He was such a great listener--so attentive, so caring, asking such good questions, offering such good suggestions. And such a great talker, too--conveying in his endearingly laconic way the to-us-esoteric projects he was working on and the to-us-esoteric subjects he was knowledgeable of.

We remember his modesty and lack of any pretentiousness about either his academic and business achievements or his heritage. We recall his graciousness as a host, and his kindness and generosity (Jim recalls how, the day we first got to know you, he was telling us of plans for whitewater rafting and asked us if we'd like to come along!). Most of all, we remember how clearly he loved each of you so much.

We wish we'd been there at Unity last Sunday, and wish we could be with you this Sunday. We look forward to being with you soon. In the meantime, we hope you can feel our arms around you and our spirits with you, and know that comfort and love are enfolding you, strength and power upholding you.

We love you--
Joan, Jim, & Laura Phillips

Dear Janice and Family, Joan and I were shocked to get the news. It was just a couple of months ago that we were together at the 50th Year McCallie reunion. You and John are so dear to us. This is so sad. We send you our sincere condolences. Love Dick and Joan Williams

Dear Janice, Joe and I were so saddened to hear of John's death. William contacted me and I tried to send you an e-mail but apparently did not have a current address. We are on Bonaire until the end of Feb but will see you when we return to Nashville. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Love Rachel McAllister
