JOHN EVANS Obituary

EVANS John P. Evans (1925-2021) John Paul Evans, 95 years, passed away peacefully at home in Bethesda, Maryland, on February 11, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife of 66½ years, Eugenia Thomas Evans. A long-time resident of the Washington, DC area, he was the devoted father to Dr. Sarah Helen Evans (Scott Cameron), Paul William Evans (Wendy), Jennifer Rae Evans (Allen Koranda), Thomas Leslie Evans and Ellen Evans Agee (Jim), beloved grandfather to Mark William and Evan Cameron, Rebecca (Lucas Arias), Sarah and Molly Evans, John Paul II, Mary, Thomas Leslie, Jr., Kathryn, and Liam Evans, and adoring great grandfather to Charlotte Arias. Cherished brother to Audrey Bullers (Byron) and sister-in-law Gloria T. Justin and fond uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his dear sister Doris Rae Evans East (1927-1955) and brothers-in-law Col. John William East, John Frank Thomas, Jr. and Russell D. Thomas. John was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on October 6, 1925, to Paul Leslie Evans (1900-1960) and Gertrude Krueger Evans (1906-2009). He was a veteran of WW II, proudly serving in Europe with the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943-1946, and returned to service in the Korean War after college as a commissioned Army officer. He attended the Instituto Politecnica de Puerto Rico for a year after coming home and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Michigan Technological University, his Masters in Physics from University of Michigan and completed his PhD work at the University of Maryland. He had a distinguished career at the National Bureau of Standards (now known as NIST) where his scientific contributions concentrated on high temperature resistance thermometry. After retiring from the federal government he spent many years as a consulting metrologist working with scientists around the world. He remained actively engaged in the work of the standards-setting organization ASTM International and was named an honorary Fellow for his exemplary professional leadership. He and Eugenia were active members of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church for all of their marriage. John faithfully sang in the Chancel Choir for more than 50 years and was a founding member of the barbershop quartet, The Metropolitans. John enthusiastically served as a scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 666 and continued in scout leadership for many years, receiving both the Silver Beaver Award and the John Wesley Fellow Award. In his later years, he was involved with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and cherished the fellowship of those Friday luncheons reciting poetry and solving problems of the world. He was a longtime member of the Philosophical Society of Washington, DC. A man of arts and sciences who enjoyed a long rich life, he pursued many interests and had unlimited curiosity, always marveling at technological advancements. But what was dearest to him was success as a family man. He relished the comings and goings of his children and grandchildren over the years and always delighted in the joy of family gatherings, even the virtual ones. Most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his wife at home, traveling, dining out or visiting loved ones. He will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in his memory to the National United Methodist Church, Washington, DC. Online at https://onrealm.org/nationalchurch/give/Memorial. Or by mail to The National Church, 3401 Nebraska Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20016. A celebration of life is planned for a later time once it is again possible to gather safely.A celebration of life is planned for a later time once it is again possible to gather safely.

Heartfelt condolences to Eugenia and family. What a joy to have known John and Eugenia through NUMC, and the wonderful Metropolitans kindly sharing their gift of song at my mother’s 75th birthday celebration is a special memory indeed.
Peace and blessings to all.

I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to work with John for a number of years on ASTM Committee E20 on Temperature Measurement. John was a hero, a mentor and a friend.

While always ready with a smile for everyone, he did not suffer fools lightly, nor would he permit ambiguity or imprecise language in the ASTM documents under his charge.

John brought innovation, improvement, and perspective to every standards activity he ever participated in.

Long after his retirement from NIST and even later, when he discontinued attending semiannual ASTM meetings, he continued to remain a member of the committee, voting (and often commenting) on every ballot. John remained a resource to the committee, we could phone up John and he would share his knowledge of, or offer to review, the matter at hand.

He was a truly remarkable man and he will be dearly missed. Godspeed, John.
