JOHN McKENNA Obituary

McKENNA John James McKenna, Jr. Of Kensington MD died February 26, 2022 at his home with his wife and family. He was 58. He had been treated for pancreatic cancer since mid-December. An accomplished Washington attorney, he was perhaps best remembered as a witty loving friend and father whose deep Catholic faith was rooted in action. John described himself as deeply blessed until the day he died. Having been raised by wonderful parents with his beloved siblings, then joyously living his vocation as husband and father with complete devotion, he felt the hand of God surrounding him always. DURING HIS COLLEGE YEARS HE VOLUNTEERED WITH Father Robert Thames in his parish in Juarez Mexico. In 2018 HE TRAVELED TO Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Togo, West Africa. He was so grateful to witness how missionaries supported both human and spiritual needs in those they served. John was born in Washington, DC to J. James McKenna and Lois Dyer McKenna, who survive him. He grew up in Bethesda MD and graduated in 1986 from Saint Anselm College, Manchester NH. It was there where he had the fortune of meeting and falling in love with Meg Hoffner, whom he married in 1988. As joyous teammates, he and Meg raised four children, who survive him: Jack, Molly, Claire, and Charlie McKenna. They were his heart and deepest delight. After graduating from Catholic University Columbia School of Law in 1990, he clerked for Judge Thomas Flannery at the US District Court for the District of Columbia. He was an associate at Schulman Rogers and McManus Schor Asmar and Darden. In 2010 he proudly helped found the law firm of Asmar, Schor, & McKenna, PLLC, along with his partners Chuck Asmar and Larry Schor, whom he loved and respected. Together they established a thriving practice, which continues. He took great pride in his firm's work and deep integrity. John was a parishioner of Holy Redeemer Church in Kensington MD since 1992. His parish family always nourished his faith, especially since the time of his cancer diagnosis. Their constant prayers, love, and support provided deep comfort and consolation as he fought cancer with characteristic grace and irrepressible humor John was a humble man - unassuming and steadfast - and enjoyed life thoroughly. Whether he was lobbing a tennis ball, trolling the Boca Grande shoreline for snook, or meticulously curating his legendary Christmas playlists, he lived his life with wonderment and found joy in every aspect of it. Along with his parents of Bethesda, MD. He is also survived by his sister, Polly McKenna Cress and her husband, Richard Cress of Philadelphia, PA, as well as his brother, Ross McKenna and his wife, Jennifer McKenna of Queen Creek, AZ, and many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. He was also a beloved brother-in-law and uncle to the entire extended Hoffner clan. Visitation Thursday, March 3, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kensington MD; Mass of Christian Burial Saturday March 5 at 12 noon also at Holy Redeemer. This is a text I sent to John before he passed:

John, when I think of nice guys, you come to mind; when I think of good husbands, you come to mind; when I think of loving and supportive fathers, you come to mind; when I think of people who have made a positive difference in their lives, you come to mind.
As a wise person once said, we don't control our birth nor when we leave this world, but we do control how we affect our families, friends and communities while we are here.
On that score, John, you have done an excellent job.
You remain in my prayers every day, John.
Your friend,
Carl

I was very sorry to read of John's untimely passing. He was a bright and talented student of mine at Saint Anselm College; although I had lost touch with him over the years, his success in life and his wonderful, kind, and charitable deeds are not surprising given his deep faith and his God-given gifts. I will remember him and the family in my prayers. Requiescat in pace.

For one week a year, in the town of New London, NH, throughout my childhood, John was my best friend. We saw each other grow up and we experienced so much together. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect or anticipate I would write this message at this time. It is paralyzing how much my heart aches.

All of my love to John's parents, his brother and sister, his wife and all his children.

John was a great man and a gentle soul. Two attributes that we should all strive to combine in our lives.

I will miss him so incredibly much.....

I only knew John professionally but he always made me feel like a friend. He was a terrific lawyer. He could get right to the heart of whatever the issue of the moment happened to be and, no matter how serious that issue might have seemed, he always found something for us to laugh about! I will miss him and my heart goes out to his family, close friends, and colleagues. Gone too soon. Jeff Blum
