JOHN MICHAEL MEIGHAN, JR. CAPTAIN USN (Ret.)
Captain John Michael Meighan, Jr. USN (Ret.), age 84, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Captain Meighan was a native Washingtonian and a proud graduate of Holy Name School, Gonzaga College High School, Georgetown University and Georgetown Law School. He served 30 years in the Navy's Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps and then practiced law privately after his retirement from the Navy. Captain Meighan is survived by his former wife, Lorraine E. Meighan; his daughters MaryBeth Dober (Dave Dober) and Annie Kendrick (Ryland Kendrick); sons John Meighan (Missy Meighan) and Justin Meighan (Beth Meighan); 11 grandchildren (Meighan, Michaela, Emily, Brenna, Michael, Joey, Bridget, Colleen, Clare, Logan and Ruilei) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his Father, John; Mother, Idell; Sister, Patricia; and Brother, Rev. Thomas A. Meighan. Friends and family will be received at Pumphrey's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD 20814 on Sunday, June 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 6001 Western Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20015 on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Kiwanis of Jacksonville Beaches, P.O. Box 50504, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32240 or to Gonzaga College High School, Development Office, 19 Eye Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001. I met Captain Meighan as the dad of a new and alarmingly lovely and nice friend (Marybeth)I made on the bus home from Immaculata High one day. We became thick as thieves and had so much in common. As a young gawky high schooler, Captain Meighan was different from most parents/fathers. He engaged with us at every opportunity and listened keenly to what we were up to. His merry eyes were warm and inviting, which made up for his height and shoulders! After I turned my own father down at the IPS "Pop hop" dance to dance, Captain Meighan asked me to dance. I could not refuse. He twirled me all over while Marybeth danced with my (slightly wounded) dad. We four had the best of times and they ever ended as over the years we reunited. He was a father to us all during carpool to school, jobs and dances. I feel blessed to have known him and will always cherish and love all things Meighan. Kathy "Mac" Crowley.
