JOHN MERGNER Obituary

MERGNER John G. Mergner Sr. (Age 86) Born July 20, 1935, John G. Mergner Sr. passed away peacefully of natural causes with his children by his side in Frederick, MD on January 21, 2022. He is survived by his five children, Colleen Mergner Ryan (Gerry), Jack Mergner (Chrissy), Kenneth Mergner (Annika), Susan Mergner Ribot (Stephane), and Thomas Mergner (Stacey); eleven grandchildren, Kelly, Michael, Megan, Melissa, Patrick, Debbie, Michelle, Scott, Tyler, Alex, and Oliver; five great grandchildren Saige, Bodhi, Olivia, Charlie, and Thomas; and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick "Fred" C. Mergner and Agnes Vivian (Meinberg) Mergner; four siblings Helena, Henry, Elizabeth, and Frederick; a granddaughter Kirsten Mergner; along with his former beloved wife and mother to their five children, Mary Katherine "Kathy" Mergner. A native Washingtonian, John graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, MD and Georgetown University in Washington, DC with a degree in Economics. He had a long and distinguished career in the securities, real estate and oil & gas industries that spanned almost six decades. His asso- ciations in the securities industry included Riviere Securities Corporation, Dominick & Dominick Inc., Wheat First Butcher Singer, Inc. (later First Union Securities, Inc.), and Morgan Stanley. In addition to his prolific securities career, John served on various boards including J.D. Riviere & Co., Inc., the Washington Board of Realtors, the Security Traders of Washington, DC, and Bagel Master, Inc. Respected, trusted and loved by colleagues, clients, and partners, he ultimately retired from Morgan Stanley in 2015 where he laid the foundation and leaves his legacy in The Mergner Group at Morgan Stanley. Outside of the office, John enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing golf as a member of Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, and was a Washington sports fan loyal to the Georgetown Hoyas, Washington Redskins ("HTTR") and Washington Capitals where he was a proud season ticket holder for more than a decade. Those who knew John in and around the community could find his free time devoted to coaching youth baseball, mentoring others, sharpening his golf game or at the beach with his family. He was an avid reader and gardener, tending to his well-manicured yards in Bethesda and Ocean City, MD. John will be forever remembered and missed dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD. Dear Colleen and family, Rick and I just this minute heard of your father´s passing, we are so very sorry for your loss. Your Dad and my Dad enjoyed such a special friendship as did our Moms. Rick and I will be forever grateful to your Dad for giving Rick his start in the financial industry. Time sure has gotten away from us, I would love to reconnect with you once things have begun to settle down for you and your family. In the meantime we will keep all of the Mergners in our thoughts and prayers. I smile at the thought that there is a pretty good card game of bridge taking place up in heaven between some dear friends. Take care Colleen.
