Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals Inc. on Mar. 29, 2026.
Roy Leonard Mergner, who was born on September 6, 1930, in
Newark, New Jersey, and passed away on March 28, 2026, in Keansburg, was a beloved lifelong resident of Keansburg whose long life was marked by devotion to family, independence, service, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
Roy lived in Newark for two years before becoming a lifelong resident of Keansburg, the community he came to know as home. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Eleanor Mergner, and by his four brothers, William Mergner, Walter Mergner, Ernest Mergner, and Robert Mergner. He is survived by his best friend, neighbor, and caretaker, Margaret LaFoe, and her husband, Shawn Ecklof, as well as his niece, Sharon Nordahl, who held a special place in his life.
Roy was a proud graduate of Middletown Township High School, where he was the valedictorian of the Class of 1948. He later continued his education at Rutgers University, an accomplishment that reflected the discipline and determination that would guide him throughout his life. Even in his younger years, Roy stood out for his intelligence, steadiness, and quiet confidence.
Roy honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War, where he worked as an electrician air radio man. His service was an important chapter in his life, and he carried the values of duty, responsibility, and perseverance with him long after his military years ended. Following his time in the Navy, Roy worked as a broadcaster for a musical program in New York from 1958 to 1960. He later spent many years in New York City working at advertising companies Reilly Graphics and International Image Corporation. He retired in 2004 after a long and dedicated career.
Roy had many interests that brought him joy throughout his life. While in high school, he played percussion in the band, and music remained an important part of his life for many years. He loved listening to the radio, whether it was Bloomberg, WFAN, 1010 Wins for current events and political information, or big band music. He especially enjoyed trips to New York City, where he found energy and excitement in the pace of the city he knew so well. He also enjoyed reading about stem cells, astrology, and sweepstakes, always remaining curious and engaged with the world.
Although he considered himself a sports fan, Roy often preferred to follow games on the radio, listening closely and keeping up with the action in his own way. He was, however, a devoted fan of Tom Brady. He also enjoyed the calls from his niece Sharon, which brought him happiness and connection. Roy especially cherished going out to breakfast and spending the holidays with the LaFoe family, moments that added warmth and companionship to his later years.
Roy faced the challenge of losing his vision to glaucoma with remarkable strength and dignity. He took great pride in remaining independent and never viewed his blindness as a disability. His resilience, self-respect, and determination were defining qualities that inspired those who knew him. He met life's changes with courage and grace, continuing to live on his own terms.
Those who knew Roy will remember his steady presence, his love of conversation and current events, his appreciation for music and sports, and his deep loyalty to the people and places that mattered most to him. He lived a full and meaningful life, and his memory will remain a lasting comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 9AM to 10AM at Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals Inc., 233 Carr Avenue Keansburg. The burial will follow immediately at Shorelands Cemetery, Hazlet
