Joseph Auslander Obituary

Joseph Auslander died peacefully at his home in Washington, DC, on April 7, 2025, at age 94, while working on mathematics.

Born September 10, 1930, in New York City, NY, Joe earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania after attending Queens College and MIT. He joined the University of Maryland-College Park in 1963, remaining active in mathematics until his death.
Joe advocated for young mathematicians, especially from underrepresented backgrounds. His research focused on topological dynamics and the philosophy of mathematics. He remained a committed progressive his entire life, particularly regarding a just peace in the Middle East.

A lover of classical music, cooking, dinner parties, and the New York Times, Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Barbara Meeker, his sister, children Mark and Bonnie, and grandchildren Nina and Milo.

Memorials will be held at the Mathematical Association of America in Washington, DC, on May 9 and later in New York City, NY. Donations may be made in Joe's name to the Project NExT fund at maa.org/support-maa/donate/.
