JOSEPH FRANCAVILLA Obituary

FRANCAVILLA Archimandrite Joseph Francavilla A faithful shepherd and spiritual father to many, fell asleep in the Lord November 13, 2019, while surrounded by fellow priests and his parishioners who loved him. He was 76 years old. Fr. Joseph has served as pastor at Holy Transfiguration Greek Catholic Church in McLean, Va. since 1971, just two years after his ordination as priest of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton. Since then, he fully poured out himself in selfless service to his congregation setting an example of genuine Christian love. He has baptized many Christians, crowned hundreds of couples in Holy Matrimony and inspired numerous ordinations. Fr. Joseph perfected the gift of hospitality believing in the importance of relationships. Holy Transfiguration is known in the community for its annual Middle Eastern Food Festival, which was important to Fr. Joseph as a means sharing the beauty of the Eastern Church with the community. His family, friends and congregation grieve his loss and are committed to follow his example in all that their beloved priest taught them. Born January 16, 1943, he grew up in Buffalo, NY and is survived by three brothers: Thomas Francavilla, 80, Charles Francavilla, 77 and Paul Francavilla, 65. He joins his father, Joseph Vincent Francavilla and mother Mary Boncore Francavilla in eternal rest. After battling pancreatic cancer for two years, he faced death with unshakable courage and deep faith and with the kind of humility, grace and class that characterized his whole life. He will be remembered as a holy priest, a loyal friend and a spiritual father to many. "That is about as successful a life as anyone can have," said his brother Charles Francavilla. Services will be held at Holy Transfiguration Greek Melkite Church 8501 Lewinsville Rd, McLean, VA. 22102 according to the following schedule: visitations on Monday, November. 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services that evening at 7:30 p.m. Divine Liturgy with Trisagion Service and burial will be held the next morning, Tuesday November 19 at 10:30 a.m. Fr. It was wonderful reading about Father Joseph´s life on his anniversary. He was a gem of a human being. I remember him fondly every time I consult the set of amazing Sicilian culture books he generously sent me. He will never be forgotten. RIP.

I am saddened to hear of Father Joseph Francavilla´s passing, even though so
long ago. His father, also named Joseph, was a childhood friend of my father. I think they lived down the street from each other. Father Joseph was generous enough to send me a sizable collection of Sicilian folklore, music, and folk tales that I will cherish forever. They are displayed in my reading room and I consult them regularly for my Italian teaching. I will be forever grateful and will never forget his kindness to me.

Thinking of our beloved Father Joseph on this first anniversary of his passing. What a loss for us but a gain for heaven.

You have been a glistening light in our lives since you first appeared on the scene in 1971, Father Joe. I was so happy in your presence and even inspired to make the occasional trays of baklava and bring them to the old church on Route 7. How poignant that you found your way back there today where it all began. What you have accomplished over the years borders on miraculous and you have been a comfort, inspiration, and support to a multitude. Always will we remember our times together whether you were honoring us with visits to our homes, joking around with my parents, training my son for altar service, or participating in my daughter's wedding. For all these reasons and more I am heartbroken about the epitaph on your tombstone because it was us who were unworthy.

WE ARE DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE LOSS OF DEAR FATHER JOSEPH. FATHER JOSEPH WAS A HEAVENLY GIFT TO US ALL. WE PRAY WE WILL MEET AGAIN.
FAITHFULLY,
