JOSEPH HOGAN Obituary

JOSEPH MICHAEL HOGAN, SR. (Age 77)

Died on October 17, 2014, surrounded by family. He was born on August 10, 1937, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to the late Austin B. Hogan, Sr. and Dorothy Flynn Hogan.

He graduated with a BS in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame, served as an officer in the US Navy, and earned his Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University.

Joseph worked as an attorney for the Department of Defense, NASA, and the US Department of Labor while living in Bethesda, MD. He retired from federal service as a member of the Senior Executive Service, after moving to San Francisco to head up the regional Office of Federal Contract Compliance. After several years of retirement, he moved to Las Vegas, where he was active in labor issues. Joseph was elected in 2004 to the Nevada General Assembly. A lifelong Democrat, he served five sessions in the Nevada Legislature with special focus on minority opportunities and water conservation. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and announced his retirement from the legislature in 2014.

Surviving are his sister, Patricia Steiner of Chicago, his brother, Brian Hogan of Los Angeles, step-mother Irene Hogan of Fort Dodge, IA, sister-in-law Margaret Hogan of Arlington, VA, his children, daughter, Kathleen Rauh (Chris) of Cary, NC, son, J. Michael Hogan, Jr. (Mary) of Arlington, VA, and son David J. Hogan (Ryan) of Raleigh, NC, and five grandchildren Allison, Maribeth and Brian Rauh, and Maggie and Katie Hogan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann A. Hogan in 1978, and his brothers the Rev. David J. Hogan, and Austin B. Hogan, Jr. His marriage to Sandy S. Hogan ended earlier this year.

His interests, other than politics, included international travel, rock-hounding, and hiking. He is remembered as a soft-spoken and kind- hearted gentleman who fought for opportunity for all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

I first met Joe while I was campaigning for a Assembly. He was smart, kind and full of great ideas. I was happy when he decided to run for the legislature. I even walked door to door for him! He was passionate about making sure that women and minorities were treated equally especially when bidding contracts. He made his mark and will be remembered as a gentle but strong voice for everyday people. Please accept my condolences. Chris Giunchigliani
