Judith Shulman Obituary

SHULMAN

JUDITH LINDA SHULMAN "Judy"

(Age 76)

Judith Linda Shulman passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday, January 22, 2024. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Jerry Shulman; her sister Barbara (Glenn Doherty) Milhender and her daughters Katharine and Victoria (Brooks Palmer) Shulman. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 26, at 10 a.m. at Adas Israel Congregation, 2850 Quebec Street NW, Washington, DC 20008, with her internment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens Cemetery (Adas Israel Section), located at 16225 Batchellors Forest Road (off Georgia Avenue), Olney, MD 20832. Shiva services will beheld at the family's home at 2843 Allendale Place, NW, Washington, DC on Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. each day.

Judy was first and foremost a teacher. She graduated from Lesley University with a BS Ed. and began teaching at inner city schools in Boston . . . until Jerry proposed marriage on the sole condition that they move south to avoid Boston winters. Later in life she began volunteering as a school docent at the National Gallery of Art here in Washington, leading student groups from kindergarden age to seniors in high school. For the next 20-plus years she introduced countless childen to a world of creativity and imagination.

Judy's tours were vivid and special. Whether she joined with her students dancing in front of a Degas painting of ballerinas (doing so in a wheelchair later in life), had them counting the number of lions in the den with Daniel, or had them staring up at the large Calder mobile and trying to guess its weight, she saw art as immersive and exciting, and hoped that each child would leave the Gallery feeling the same way after one of her tours.

Sadly, Judy suffered during most of her life from multiple debilitating illnesses. Death was imminent on a number of occasions, but her indominable spirit and strength won out each time, utterly confounding her physicians. This time, however, death proved inevitable, although, in the end, peaceful. She will be missed greatly by her family, friends and all who had the privilege of meeting her.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made either to The National Gallery of Art (nga.gov) or the Sibley Memoiral Hospital Foundation (sibleyfoundation.org).

Deepest sympathy to Judy's family and countless friends. Just being in her presence was enlightening. An intelligent giving human being. There are so many people whose lives she enriched. The unselfish concern for the welfare of others. After much personal suffering during her life, I was happy to hear that her final hours were peaceful and surrounded by loved ones. She will surely Rest in Peace. Along with all her other classmates, she will remain with me always.

To know Judy was to know a bright, giving, dynamic force. She defied her illnesses with a passionate "no". She showed us how to live. Judy will certainly be missed and remembered.

Sending my love and deepest sympathies
Aunt Judy welcomed me into her family over 25 years ago through marriage. She loved my children and I can remember our fun trips to visit with the kids to DC to visit her. I remember her taking Mackenzie and Lindsay to the museum and her vivid details and fun explanations of details to a 5 year old and 3 year old

I haven´t gotten to visit Aunt Judy in over 10 years since my divorce but I there was never a time she wasn´t in my thoughts and prayers and she will be missed immensely

Sending my love and prayers during this difficult time
Vicki, Mackenzie, Lindsay and Jackson Danzik
