McMANUS KATHLEEN FLANAGAN McMANAUS "Kate" (Age 85) On November 27, 2015, Kathy, a mother, grandmother to many, and friend to all, joined her siblings and her ancestors to see the face of God. Born the seventh of eight children on April 7, 1930, in Bangor, Maine, she met the love of her life, Reginald, at 14 years of age whom she married 12 years later. Graduating as salutatorian from John Bapst High, she would have been valedictorian, but because "it was the boys year" (they alternated years for the honor) her future husband took the honor. She obtained a nursing degree, finishing at the top of her class. After marriage she moved to Washington, DC where she began her primary vocation raising her family. She also provided nursing care and worked in the family practice. Always the epitome of caring, humility and service, she was loved by all whose lives she touched. Her wisdom was only outdone by her compassion and purity of heart. An unkind word never passed her lips. She engaged everyone she met even strangers on the street and if she found out you were from Maine - hope you have a few minutes to chat. The family and many friends she leaves sorely miss her, but she will be welcomed happily by the multitude of others who have passed before her. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Reginald McManus, M.D.; five children - Christopher McManus, M.D. (Laurie), Kathy McManus, Ph.D. (Jorn Flatvoll),Patrick McManus, M.D. (Mary Elizabeth), Anna Hayes (Dan), and John McManus, J.D. (Deborah). Her life was blessed with 13 grandchildren whom she loved and adored - Paul Ryan, Caitlin, Kelsey & Charlie McManus, Maitland Holbrook (Austin), Elizabeth "Cameron" Wortham DPT (Coleman), and Daniel McManus; Megan Hayes FSA, CERA, Katie Hayes Ozarowski, D.O. (Alan) and Molly Hayes; and grandsons Sean, Patrick & Aidan McManus. She was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Grace Ozarowski, with her sibling on the way. Her viewing and visitation is set for Friday December 11, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. Her funeral Mass is scheduled at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, VA on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11 A.M. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. She was deeply committed to her vocations as a mother, caregiver and to her faith as a servant of God, Jesus. Her example more than her words was instrumental in instilling that same spirit in those in her life. Condolences and further commentary can be expressed at www.fmfh.com.
