As one of her classmates from elementary school (and possibly earlier) through high school, we were in many of the same classes and activities (from Brownie Troupe to Girl Scouts, band, JV and varsity sports, Girls' Leaders, National Honor Society, student governmentthe list goes on). Though our lives diverged after high school graduation, we had the pleasure of reconnecting at our 40th year high school reunion. It was as if we were just picking up from yesterday. When she told me about her work in the Peace Corps and her contributions in the field of nutrition and food insecurity, it was evidence of all that I knew of her ever the thoughtful one, she lived her convictions and made the world a better place for it. It's heartbreaking that she was taken so early. My deepest condolences to Phil and her family. May your memories of life with her continue to illuminate your paths.

I spent my senior year of high school with Kathy and lived across the street from her. I just learned of her passing today and want to extend my condolences to her family. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

My condolences to Kathy's family. I first met Kathy in the 1980s when she visited from Australia and came to my workplace in Hyattsville, Maryland to talk about her food security research. I was working on planning the nutrition component for the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey at the time. Her research on food security was instrumental in our ability to add food security measures to the 1988-94 survey, and it laid the foundation for later research on the topic. Kathy was a warm, kind person, and I enjoyed our chats over the years.

I met Kathy through work in Papua New Guinea, but remember her more as a good friend in Brisbane, as we tried to adapt from full time study and work to early motherhood together. I still treasure a battered copy of a book she gave me Child of Mine, by Ellyn Satter - that we pored over endlessly, trying to figure out breastfeeding and what to feed our infants/toddlers. As a nutritionist, obviously Kathy wanted to provide the very best food for her family, and I benefited from that as well on the frequent afternoons spent at the Brisbane house. She introduced us to the Moosewood cookbook, and how to fold filo pastry to make spanakopita a recipe which we still make frequently and which our kids now make too! She was also willing to load three kids in her car and drive to the local mall where she simultaneously entertained them while helping me buy a dress for some long-forgotten event, to cheer me up when nothing from pre-baby times would fit. She was a kind, generous person who always tried to do the best in every way, in her work as well as her life. Her final years of work contribution and enjoyment of her family and friends were robbed from her, and she did not deserve that at all. She was stolen from us much too soon. I will always remember her best in PNG, Cornell, and Brisbane, rising to the challenges and helping others along too. Condolences to her family, especially Phil, Katura and William who made sure she was well looked after.

My condolences to Phil, Katura, William, and the rest of Kathy's family. Many of us will miss her, but none as deeply as you.
I worked closely with Kathy over many years, drawing on her food security measurement research to strengthen the U.S. food security measure. What made Kathy's research so powerful was that she cared so much about the people affected by hunger and lack of adequate food. This was not just an academic project for her. I benefited in many ways from her professional support and encouragement and look back on her career with amazement and appreciation at what she accomplished.
