On Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Fairfax Hospital. Devoted husband of the late Teresa F. McAlpine; loving father of Douglas E. McAlpine, Christopher J. McAlpine, Elizabeth A. McAlpine, Isabel M. Burke, James S. McAlpine and Nancy T. McAlpine. Other survivors include one brother and two sisters, Roderick J. McAlpine and Jean M. Bryant, who reside in St. Petersburg, FL and Flora E. Moos, who resides in Tucson, AZ; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was a retired executive with the National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council. Upon retirement from the National Academy of Sciences Air Force Studies Board in 1984 the Department of the Air Force presented him with the award for meritorious civilian service.
He also had been employed with the old Atomic Energy Commission, the former Joint Committee on Atomic Energy (since replaced) and with private industry.
Mr. McAlpine was born in Framingham, MA on September 2, 1920 and graduated from American International College (1948). He also did graduate work at the University of Massachusetts.
During World War II, he served as a navigator with the Army Air Force Air Transport Command. He was recalled during the Korean War and served as a nuclear physicist in the U.S. Air Force.
A native of Massachusetts, Mr. McAlpine has resided in Arlington since 1960. The family also resided in Ridgewood, New Jersey for 8 years.
A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel where friends will gather at 8:30 a.m. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements by Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington.
