Laura Hoffman Wheelock  (1968-2017)  
Laura Hoffman Wheelock, aged 48, died at home on Orcas Island, WA, on July 3, 2017, succumbing to cancer. She leaves behind her life partner, Markus Naugle, and their two children, Nikko and Orion, ages 6 and 3; her parents, Susan Hoffman of Sperryville, VA, and Arthur Wheelock of Washington DC; her siblings Tobey and Matthew Wheelock; an extended family; and a broad and devoted set of friends. All are grieving at the loss of this vibrant, caring and gracious person. Laura, who was raised in Washington DC, had a sense of adventure that motivated her to travel the world, and to create programs that enriched countless lives. Service was a focus for her since attending the Sidwell Friends School. After graduating from Stanford in 1990, she developed a volunteer program for the Oracle Corporation. She later earned her Master's degree in Public Policy at the Kennedy School at Harvard University. In 2005, Laura and Markus created Magic Carpet Rides, a program that provides students and families with homestays and volunteer projects in Guatemala. They lived for many years in Antigua and in San Juan la Laguna, a Mayan community on the shores of Lake Atitlan, before returning to Orcas Island last fall. Although Laura's life ended far too soon, her legacy will live on through her warmth, her close friendships, and the ways in which she impacted so many others.A gathering to honor and celebrate Laura's life will be held at the Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. at 2 p.m. on July 29.
