Lawrence Raphael Winters, Jr.
Passed away on November 13, 2018. Preceded in death by his brother, Joseph R. Winters Sr., he is survived by his daughters, Sheron, Dawn, and Keley Smith, son, Lawrence R. Winters, III (Aftan), grandchildren, Niya Smith and Nasir Riddick, sisters, Marjorie Karim and Jonetta Winters, brother, Romonde C. Winters (Michelle), sister-in-love, Mary-Frances Winters, and a host of other relatives and friends. Family will receive friends on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home, 4001 Benning Road, NE and on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. at Pennsylvania Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4010 Belt Road, Capitol Heights, Maryland. Lawrence( Sugar Bear) Winters was an outstanding person and friend that I met during college. I just recently learned of his Homegoing. We both pledged the same fraternity (OMEGA PSI PHI). I truly loved and respected him as an older brother who without hesitation looked out for the younger guys. He was a truly spiritual man who loved GOD and family. I pray that GOD's eternal light will forever shine on his soul. Rest in peace my brother. May GOD's mercy be extended to his family. With Deepest Sympathy and Respect!

Lawrence Winters was a friend. He had a great personality. We first met at our Kenpo Karate Club headed by the late Hanshi Robert Everhart.
Everyone at the karate club was given a nick name. Lawrence was given the name Sugar Bear , because his fun personality and has a dancing bear sparring style
Lawrence earned his Blackbelt in the 70s at Everhart's Nippon Kenpo Karate Do. All Blackbelts were required to be an example of these principles Truth, Respect, Valor, Humility, Discipline. He was a man of God and teacher of Kenpo karate.
Lawrence will be greatly missed......
