Ill never forget the lunch we had together, discussing our both being in the same town in France during the war, while he was delivering food coupons to the French underground, while my dad was fighting in the Resistance, and helping a Dachau fugitive join the Americans in North Africa. May we never forget these heroes.

I had lunch with Leo in 1998. I had read his book, which he signed for me (see below). I was born and raised in Paris and lived there during WWII. My dad faught in the French underground and was almost caught by the gestapo. To prevent my being captured to force my dad to surrender, my parents sent me to my aunt in Limoges. That's were I saw the burning of Oradour from the distance. During our luncheon Leo and I found that we had been in Limoges at the same time. Leo almost got on the tram going to Oradour, a tram which never came out, and where I lost a distant cousin.
Thank You Leo!!

It is with great sadness that I have heard of Leo's passing. I spent an incredible week in Washington DC with Leo, Flo, and others associated with the Holocaust Remembrance Project back in summer 2009, and Leo was a great influence and inspiration to me as a teacher...I was able to propose a Holocaust/Genocide Studies class at my high school, and my administration supported it and it is an elective in which I am able to share information about this history with over 100 students every school year...Leo's "Leap Into Darkness" is a book which has inspired dozens of my students each year...One student just finished reading it and was so inspired by Leo's story...it will impact her for the rest of her life! This is the effect Leo had and will continue to have on people all over the country, and likely in many parts of the world! A true Upstander and Advocate for Humanity!

We are so very sorry to learn of Leo's passing. He agreed to let my daughter videotape an interview with him years ago for a school project and both he and your mother were absolutely wonderful! They will both be missed so much; so glad that his book and powerful story will live on. My condolences to your family.....

I was so very sad to hear that Leo passed away earlier this month. Leo was THE lightning rod for my efforts, early on, when I started looking for veterans to interview. In January of 2000 Leo caught wind that a young guy in Chicago was looking for German and Austrian born WWII veterans he told everyone he knew and within hours my voice-mail was flooded by the messages of men with German accents. I'll never forget Leo's youthful air and enthusiasm that defied his advancing years - or his late wife Flo's warm hospitality whenever I stayed at their home in Baltimore. Anyone that has seen my documentary, About Face: The Story of the Jewish Refugee Soldiers of WWII will remember the audio from those very messages, including Leo's sign off: “Steve, I have another soldier for you….it's quite an interesting story, so if you call me I'll give you the details…..as they say in Cairo, Shalom!” SHALOM LEO, you will be terribly missed! My heartfelt condolences to Denise and Myron and their families.
Sincerely,
Steven Karras

Despite meeting Leo on probably fewer than five occassions, he (and his book) influenced my opinions to a larger extent than anyone else I can recall. He will be missed and always remembered.

Leo never forgot what the Nazis did to the 6 million Jews that died and to those who survived. All survivors, ourselves included, know this all too well. He tried his very best to show what happened, to make sure the world never forgets, and to see justice done. He was a pleasant and good man. We will miss him and his beloved wife. May he rest in peace and may he memory be for a blessing.

What an honor and pleasure it was to meet Leo and Flo, a"h, when he was the guest speaker during our "Days of Remembrance" program at our Environmental Science Center (ESC) in Fort Meade, MD in the Spring of 2008. His book is in our libraries at both the ESC and at our Philadelphia Regional Office. We shall remember this wonderful man for many years to come. May his memory be a blessing!

I had the pleasure of meeting Leo in 1962 when I was 15 years old. My father, Benjamin, and Leo were in business together in a store located on Lombard Street and Central Avenue. They sold the business in 1969, and we kept in touch with Leo ever since. Leo's escape from the Nazi's in World War II was just the beginning of a life dedicated to ensuring that the world would not forget the lessons learned from the holocaust. He was an avid speaker at hundreds of venues over the years and testified before a number of government committees whenever an issue related the holocaust emerged. Leo spoke with a passion that only one who lived through it could convey. To say that this man was special would be an understatement. One could argue that there was a divine purpose in Leo's escape from the Nazi Death Train. Leo realized his calling and spent the rest of his life fulfilling that purpose. We can all raise our glasses to a man well respected and to a life well lived.

Edie, Maureen and I still remember having dinner with you and your father back around 1973, drinking his wine and listening to his stories of wartime France. We've been thinking of him all these years, lately following his interviews in the Post. He is a father you can be proud of.
