LIBBIE C. DUMAINE (AGE 68)
Died on Sunday, December 14, 2003 after a long struggle with lung disease. Survivors include her daughter, Carol and husband Christian; son Mark and wife Lori; son Andrew and wife Cristina; four grandchildren, Drew, Peter, Melissa and Leah; and a niece Beverly Stapler Crumbliss and two grandnieces.
A long-time resident of Bethesda, MD, Mrs. Dumaine was born in Parkersburg, WV and received her early education in the public schools of Kanawha County, WV. She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston WV in 1952. Subsequently she studied at Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV and graduated cum laude from Ohio University, Athens, OH in 1956. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Later she studied at Syracuse University and earned an M.A. degree from the University of Maryland in American Studies in 1973.
Her marriage to Robert T. Dumaine ended in divorce in 1990. Beginning in 1960, she accompanied him on assignments abroad, where she served as a teacher, substitute-teacher or faculty instructor at schools in Frankfurt-an-Main and Bonn, Germany; in Moscow in the former USSR, in Vienna, Austria where she taught English classes at Commercial School I; in Helsinki, Finland; and briefly at the Law School of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan. Mrs. Dumaine studied German at Goethe University in Bonn, Germany and at the University of Salzburg in Austria. She passed the PH.D examination in the German language at the University of Maryland, and completed a course in the Finnish language at the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State.
Mrs. Dumaine also was employed by The Charleston Gazette in West Virginia from 1952-1956; The National Catholic Welfare Conference in Washington, D.C. from 1957-1958; Kelly Services of Montgomery, AL; and the Air Command and Staff College of the Department of the U.S. Air Force from 1979-1980. At the time of her death, Mrs. Dumaine was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honorary for historians; the American Historical Association, the Potomac River Basin Consortium, and the Loudoun County (VA) League of Women Voters.
An exceptional mother and friend, her spunk, determination, sense of humor, and courage will be missed by all who loved her. A memorial service for family and friends will be held late January 2004. Memorial donations may be made be made in her name to The Hospice of Northern Virginia, 9300 Lee Highway, Suite 500, Fairfax, VA 22031.
