Lloyd Aronson Obituary

ARONSON LT. COL. LLOYD HARRY ARONSON U.S. AIR FORCE (Ret.) On October 26, 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd H. Aronson took his final flight into the Wild Blue Yonder, departing from Reston Hospital Center, Virginia. A Falls Church resident for the past 45 years, he was born in Boston, MA on February 14, 1919 to William and Ruth Aronson and grew up in Norwalk, CT. He graduated from Parks Air College in St. Louis, MO and joined the Army Air Corp in 1941, which became the U.S. Air Force six years later. As a pilot, Col Aronson had an illustrious career that began in Asia, ferrying supplies in the China-Burma-India Theater. He performed as personal pilot to General Claire Chennault of the "Flying Tigers" fame. One of his exploits while flying the C-B-I was chronicled in (then) Lt Col Robert L. Scott's book, "God is My Co-Pilot." He later flew the Berlin Airlift, and it was during this period in October of 1948 that he met and married in Frankfurt, Germany. Shortly afterward, he also participated in the Korean Airlift. Among his many awards and accomplishments, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Retired from the Air Force in June 1961, Col Aronson pursued a second career as an Aerospace Education Specialist for NASA, where he spent the following 22 years. He was an accomplished musician, having played both saxophone and clarinet in a dance band in his college years; an avid photographer; and a casual golfer. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Chris Aronson (nee Lea); one son, Laurence H. (Larry) Aronson; daughter-in-law Kathleen Aronson; three grandchildren: Steven L., Lucas H., and Laura E. Aronson; a sister, Evelyn; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Col Aronson will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors on January 26, 2011 at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Everly Funeral Home located at 6161 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22044. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of Homeless Animals, P.O. Box 2575, Merrifield, VA 22116-2575 or the charity of your choice.

Mr. Aronson's son, Larry, and I became friends during our 1960s Kenmore Jr. High School years. I remember Mr. Aronson as being friendly, kind and possessing a good sense of humor. He gave a science lecture/demonstration at Kenmore that was fantastic and remains a highlight of my Jr. High experience. Having read of his life's exploits above, I'm even more impressed with him. Lots of things I never knew. I must purchase of copy of 'God is My Go-Pilot'. I'm sure Larry is very proud of his dad. Larry inherited many of his father's qualities. My condolences to Mrs. Aronson (also a very nice and lovely person), Larry, Kathy and their children and may God bless and comfort them all. Mr. Aronson impacted the lives of many people and will be missed but always remembered.
Love to all,
Randoiph (Randy) Nesseler

Please accept my most sincere condolences for Mr.Col. Aaronson's passing. I did not know him; but, as a former member of the Air Force and pilot, I heard much about him from my mother-in-law, Cynthia, who lived in India and was friends with he and his wife. I regret not initiating a line of communication with him as I am very much interested in that theatre of the war. Bob McCormick.

Dear Aronson Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Lloyd for a short time in Falcon's Landing and came to enjoy chatting with him and listening to his wonderful stories. He was a special and loving man. I hope you find peace and joy in remembering him. Sincerely, Jessica

Larry and family, Allow me to extend my deepest condolences in your loss of your father. Loosing a parent, I know from personal experience, is one of the heavy losses. May you find God's presence with you as you journey through the time of grief.

The Aronsons were neighbors for years and have remained friends ever since. I used to walk almost everyday with Lloyd and spent many, many hours with both of them sitting around the kitchen table arguing politics and such. Lloyd helped me put up a fence, fix window, whatever I needed, he or Chris were there for me. Kris and I will miss him terribly.
He was an inspiration and an "all around" nice guy, extremely intelligent, yet modest and fun.

Aunt Chris and Cuz,
I remember the old Ford Van the (SPACE MOBILE) that had graphics of space ships, stars, planets and the large letters NASA on the panels. As a young boy in the 60's, that was the coolest thing ever to have parked in front of our house. When Uncle Lloyd was close to Columbus Ohio, he would swing by and make all of my friends wish they had a Uncle as neat as mine. He helped me out with a couple of school projects with some literature and even some freeze dried food "the real stuff from a space ship" as I recall saying in my presentation. I still have an 8 X 10 picture of Uncle Lloyd holding a Moon Rock. Our thoughts and payers are with you.
