LOUISE PIAZZA Obituary

Louise De Voe Piazza
Louise De Voe Piazza died peacefully, at home, on July 21, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. She is the dear wife of Paul, her husband for 47 years, and is survived by her son, Michael and wife, Georgia, of Houston, Texas, and by her daughter, Mary Maiberger and husband, Patrick, of Kensington, Maryland, and by six grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as Weezie, Nina, Michael, Grier, Paul, Madeline, and Katherine. The daughter of Edward and Lucille De Voe, Louise graduated Valedictorian from Bloomsburg High School and Phi Beta Kappa from Penn State University. She earned a Masters in English Literature from the University of Maryland. Louise enjoyed a varied career: she taught English; worked as an editor, writer, and financial consultant for AARP; served as a Financial Advisor for Ameriprise; and authored several memoirs.  A loving and gentle person, Louise was creative and multi-talented. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren, family, and many friends. She enjoyed many interests: games of all kinds, particularly Scrabble, bridge, and crossword puzzles; film noir, crime novels, and nonfiction; genealogy and family history; decorating the house for holidays; and elegant clothes. A Memorial Service will be held at All Saints Church, 3 Chevy Chase Circle, on Saturday, August 11, at 11 o'clock. A reception will follow at the Cosmos Club, from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Lungevity (https://lungevity.org).

I am so sorry to come across this obituary only now. When I was a senior (Class of 1975), Mrs. Piazza was also my English teacher at Ursuline Academy. I recently mentioned to my husband, John (also Sullivan), that Mrs. Piazza was a teacher I have always remembered. She was excellent, and I am sure I learned more from her than any other teacher I can remember. The writing skills I developed in her classes have served me extremely well over these many years! My daughter, who is also a teacher, has heard (more than once) my stories of Mrs. Piazza and the Russian literature class I did not want to take. Thankfully, however, I completed that class with much appreciation for my teacher!!

This news came to me only recently. Mrs. Pizza was the best English teacher I ever had. She taught me how to write well. It carried me through college and 40 plus years in broadcast journalusm. I've tried to pass her wisdom onto my son. We both owe her so much.

I shall always recall the kindness of Louise and Paul when I was a younger, struggling teacher at St Albans, whom they often welcomed to their New Year's Eve buffet and festivities. Many subsequent years have only enhanced my appreciation. The Piazzas are a remarkably loving family, and Louise's generous and gracious spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Requiescat in pacem Domini nostri, dear Louise.

The world has lost an amazing woman It was a true honor to know Louise. I enjoyed her playful spirit and adventurous ways. She shared so much of herself during our friendship. I will cherish our talks that usually included a sweet treat. I met Louise in her later years and I admired her strong desire for continued learning and meeting new people. She was often going to a class or training program. When others were settling in to old ways, Louise was inspired to learn something new. My friendship with Louise opened my mind, inspired me, and slowed me down to the unique need for human connections. She knew and cared for so many people. I never met someone who stayed so connected to such a large amount of friends. I wish her family hope and love as they journey through this loss. Rest in Peace Louise.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Louise's passing. I knew Louise as a financial planning colleague and member of a peer-to-peer support group in the financial field. She always had great insights. The loss of Louise will be felt by many.

I'm another student from Ursuline Academy in the early 1970's who benefited from her wisdom and passion for excellence, all delivered with grace and good humor. My sympathies to the Piazza family.

Heartfelt condolences to the family. I echo what my Ursuline classmates said above. Much of my career success Is attributable to my writing ability, and it was Mrs. Piazza who taught me to write well. I still have the last paper I wrote for her my senior year; I kept it because her positive comments meant more to me than almost any feedback I've received before or since. As much as you will miss her, please know that her contributions continue to bear fruit.

One of the wisest and niftiest teachers I ever had. I am sure a Louise Piazza shaped space will reside in the hearts of countless students and colleagues, and friends, and especially family members.

Condolences to the Piazza family. In the early 1970s, Mrs. Piazza was my English teacher at Ursuline Academy in Bethesda. Her name is my answer to the forgot your password question who was your favorite teacher. I write for a living and for pleasure because of her.

I met Louise in 1965, our freshman year at Penn State, as we were pledging the same sorority. We became instant friends and remained so. She was so smart!! She could write an A+ English paper in an hour. We had a friendly competition to see who led our chapter with the highest grade point average each semester (we received special recognition at our chapter meetings). It was usually Louise (I sneaked in there a few times). What a blast.

And we LOVED to play Scrabble. We always played to garner the most points, rather than compete against each other. I remember when we broke 600 points combined the first time - I took a photo of the board, and I hope I still have it.

We always kept in touch, and I sang at her wedding and Mary's wedding. Those are great memories.
Rest in peace dear friend, love you much.

For years at AARP (and after too), Louise was my adviser and friend. And each bit of learning was always accompanied by her signature smile.

A whole lot of people are sure to miss her insights, compassion, good humor and style.
