Marcia Read Obituary

'EAD MARCIA WILSON READ Marcia Wilson Read was born on October 23, 1954 in Washington, D.C. to Mildred and Joseph Wilson. As a lifelong resident of Arlington, Virginia, she grew up with her sister Janet and brother Joseph Wilson on N. Wakefield Street. Gifted musically, athletically, and academically, Marcia played the piano and viola. She was a stand-out Donaldson Run swimmer and graduated from Yorktown High School in 1972 as a valedictorian. Marcia attended the University of Virginia as one of the first classes of women, graduating with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences in 1976 and a Masters of Environmental Sciences in 1978. In addition to excelling academically, Marcia swam on the UVA swim team and also played in the orchestra. She met her husband Ralston "Pete" Read there in September 1973. Marcia went to work at the U.S. Army Office of the Chief of Engineers in 1982 and served a key role on the team, helping to develop the then-new environmental cleanup program mandated by Congress. In 1993 Marcia accepted a position with the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) for Environmental Security. She continued her work with Department of Defense cleanup programs with a special emphasis on policy and oversight of the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) program. In 1999, Marcia accepted a position with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health). She continued her work with the FUDS program and also specialized in community and regulatory outreach initiatives both at the Army and OSD levels. She received a Department of Army award in 2007 for superior work performed on a grant program for state regulators. Marcia and Pete married in 1981 and bought their house on N. Jefferson Street in 1982. Twin daughters Jenny and Katie were born in 1986. Marcia was both a devoted mother and an involved community member. She taught Sunday School at Trinity Presbyterian Church, was an Overlee Pool swim team rep, Arlington Tigers select soccer team manager, and an active member of the Arlington Twins Club. Marcia also remained one of the nation's best age group swimmers, continually placing top ten in her events at the Masters Swimming National Championships, including her last in May 2010. Marcia suffered a sudden brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage) on May 28, 2011 and died on May 29, 2011 at the age of 56 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. Her husband Pete was by her side. Services previously held.
