MARILYN STEPHENSON Obituary

MARILYN J. STEPHENSON  August 8, 1948 ~ October 5, 2017
Of Alexandria VA and Seminole FL ,died peacefully in Inova Hospital on Thursday, October 5, 2017, after suffering two massive strokes, with her partner of 43 years, Thom Flory, by her side. She was a proud Washingtonian, born in the District of Columbia, the only child of Rosemary Southard and Gerald Stephenson. She grew up in Arlington VA, graduating from Yorktown High School. She then went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Business from High Point University in North Carolina. She loved all things DC, including a keen love of the Redskins, the old Senators, and our new Nats. She knew those two sports better than many men and attended all she could! After retiring from General Dynamics, she had more time to explore her world. Together with Thom, she was a world traveller, reaching all seven continents, just two months ago cruising around Cuba. She was an avid and frequent league bowler, loved a good bridge game in her earlier years, and simply enjoyed time spent with long-time friends, of which she had many. She was active in her fraternity, Zeta Tau Alpha, from her chapter days at HPU continuing as an active alum in the Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter. She donated her body to science and will be cremated at a later date. At that time a memorial service may be held. Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so to any of her three choices, ZTA Foundation, 3450 Founders Road, Indianapolis IN 46268; High Point University, One University Parkway, High Point, NC 27268 or National Parks Conservation Association, 777 6th St., NW, Washington DC 20001.

What a privilege to call Lil my friend and Zeta sister. Such an incredible soul, with a gentle spirit, great sense of humor, kind heart, and truly never at a loss for words. We are all better human beings for having had Lil in our lives, and we will miss her so. Thom we mourn with you as Lil's family, more sisters than you probably know what to do with! She loved you so.

Many good memories of Lyn. Especially remembering playing games and eating out on the porch up at the Lake House. Thom, I'm so sorry for your loss. With love and prayers, Kathy

Our years at High Point University as Zeta sisters provided so many fun memories. We called her Little Lyn or Lil and she was always in the middle of the fun times. She was a good friend and cared deeply about her friends. We are so sorry for your loss, Thom. We all share in your grief.

43 years of love, laughter and travel will never be forgotten. Losing you is the hardest challenge of my life, but your many friends are such a help and they are reflecting the love and caring that you gave them. I love you and miss you so much.
