On Wednesday, May 3, 2006. Beloved husband of Naomi Waxman Perlman; beloved father of Abigail Williams; brother of Eva Silversmith, Rachel Cohen and the late David Perlman; grandfather of David, Justin, Daniel and Alexandra Williams. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Services at RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC., 5509 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA (1-888-621-8282) on Tuesday, at 10 a.m. Visitation 1 hour prior to services (9 to 10 a.m.) Graveside service and interment at Beth Moses Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services by RIVERSIDE-NASSAU NORTH CHAPELS, (516-487-9600). Contributions may be made to Assisted Living at Weinberg Village, 300 JHF Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

I've never forgotten Professor Perlman. I am still inspired by his example and talk about him with my children.

In 1963-64 I returned to Pitt to prepare for a return to a teaching career. Perhaps it was Dr. Perlman's first year at Pitt. His course in AMERICAN ECONOMIC HISTORY was a most rewarding learning experience - certainly the best History Course I've taken. Bill Toland's News Obituary on May 7 triggered warm memories.

Mark was a professional up until his death. He taught not only his specialty of economics, but the lessons of grace and dignity to our medical students and residents that interacted with him and Naomi as well over the years. I will miss our many conversations.

We send our sympathy to Naomi and Abigail. We will remember Mark for his many kind acts and his commitment to undergraduate students. Mark resisted the contemporary impersonal mode of undergraduate education at American universities and stood against the tide.

Professor Perlman was the greatest teacher of my life. I last attended his class as an undergratuate at the University of Pittsburgh fourteen years ago. He has had a deep and longlasting effect on my life and the lives of my family. I will miss him greatly.

Mark was a widely respected author, editor and teacher. His doctoral candidates are from many countries and have contributed greatly to the lands of their birth as well as to economic studies in many countries
