MARY CLANCY Obituary

CLANCY MARY ANNE CLANCY Mary Anne Clancy née Cook of Kensington, MD, died on Sunday March 7, 2021. She was 75. Although she suffered from dementia, the cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. Mary Anne was born on September 3, 1945 in Washington, DC. She was predeceased by her parents John B. and Elizabeth Cook and is survived by Pat, her husband of 54 years, and their sons: Patrick (Daniel), Michael (Haven), and Christopher (Paige), and eight grandchildren: Joseph, Benjamin, Emily, Katherine, Peter, Mary, Lillian, and Willa. Mary Anne was one of six children and is survived by her siblings: Sr. Catherine Cook OSC, Carolyn O'Brien, James Cook, Thomas Cook, and Fr. Brian Cook. Mary Anne graduated from Immaculata Junior College and The University of Maryland. She and Pat were college sweethearts and were married in 1967. Mary Anne worked at NASA but when the children came along she became a full-time mother. Neverone to value leisure, she was always active in Church and community activities. As her children grew more independent, she pursued a variety of interests including serving as a volunteer docent at the National Gallery of Art for 13 years. A devout Catholic with a sense of responsibility for the less fortunate, she served as a director of Catholic Charities and chaired the board for several years. She also volunteered at the nonprofit SHARE Food Network and could often be seen with one or more of her grandchildren helping on food distribution days. After Montgomery Hospice was so helpful as her mother was dying, Mary Anne stepped in and participated as a board member involved with fundraising and strategic planning. A Dame of Malta, Mary Anne participated in nine pilgrimages to Lourdes, France to serve the sick who traveled there seeking healing and spiritual renewal. Mary Anne was recognized by Catholic Charities and the Order of Malta for her service to others and was awarded the cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, one of the highest honors the Catholic Church confers to lay people and clergy. Devoted to Pat and her family, she is lovingly remembered as kind and generous, with a welcoming smile that betrayed her inner goodness. Family and friends feel comfortable following social distancing and mask guidelines may call at Holy Redeemer Church , 9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, MD, Saturday, March 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. PRIVATE - Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery immediately following. Pat - So sorry to see this. I was lucky to be seated next to her at that dinner so long ago at our home, and immediately realized what a wonderful person she was. I'm certain she will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with you and the Clancy family.
