Mary Ann Gilleece (Age 83)

9/3/40 â€" 12/4/23

Mary Ann Gilleece passed away on Monday, December 4th from complications of Alzheimer's which took her away from friends and family too soon. She will be missed!

Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Tricia Gilleece, her granddaughter, Anelise Gomez, her grandson, Steven Gomez, and Steven's wife Hannah and their newborn daughter Haven. There are no funeral services currently planned.

Mary Ann graduated from the University of Connecticut and then received her Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. She received a Master of Laws in Government Procurement Law from George Washington University. She was a member of the Massachusetts and District of Columbia Bars.

In 1972 Mary Ann was appointed an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She then practiced law privately. Beginning in 1977, Ms. Gilleece served for six years as Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services, Subcommittee on Investigations. She was responsible for committee functions relating to federal contracting legislation and government procurement methods.

From 1983 to 1985, Mary Ann served as the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (Acquisition Management), where she served as the principal advisor to the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering on all matters concerning management and policy for the Department of Defense acquisition and manufacturing processes. She directed the effort to make federal procurement system improvements embodied in Executive Order 12352 of March 17, 1982.

She was active in and served in many leadership positions in defense contractor and professional associations, including the National Defense Industrial Association, Women in Defense, the Association of Old Crows, the American Defense Preparedness Association, and the National Contract Management Association. She also acted as President of the Capitol Hill Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and was a Vice Chair of the American Bar Association, Section of Public Contract Law.

Mary Ann also volunteered her time with the USO of Metropolitan Washington, The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program, Signature Theatre, and her alumni associations and their foundations. She was also a long-time participant in the Women's Health Initiative.

Mary Ann loved to entertain and be entertained. Friends fondly remember the many parties she held at her home - "The Pleasure Palace" as well as her annual "Hussie's Nights" where she invited in female-owned small businesses to sell hand-crafted goods while raising money for charity. When not working or entertaining, she could often be found on the golf course â€" her favorite hobby.

I assisted Mary Ann in one of her career moves when she was moving to another law firm. I spent many hours on the phone with her and got to know her well. She was a special person with a heart of gold. She loved her family deeply and was passionate about the defense industry. I had the honor of attending some of her Wolf Trap outings and of course "Hussie's Night" at her home several times. I'm very sorry to learn of her passing just now and that she had suffered from Alzheimers. She had a wonderful mind and sharp wit. I'm so sorry that she was robbed of that at the end of her life. Deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace.

Mary Ann was first a guiding light in the Pentagon and then one of my few best friends. She was very effective through a combination of great intellect and humour. To me she was kinda of like Bette Midler except knew DC and executed strategy extremely well. My wife and I are saddened to learn of her passing. One of a kind. That´s for damn sure.

Mary Ann is my cousin, and I am saddened to hear of her passing. I always looked forward to seeing her at her Labor Day party (which) is also her birthday time. She was talented and was active in many civic and professional organizations.

Mary Ann was my mother´s cousin. As I live in NY and am in theater, Mary Ann connected with me about 35 years ago and we have remained in touch ever since. She was an avid theater goer; she came to see me perform on Broadway and came to the high school productions I directed and was equally enthusiastic about each. She served on the board of The Signature Theater in D.C. and was a great champion of all their terrific work. We had many phone conversations that usually began with Mary Ann calling me and saying "it´s your favorite cousin" when I´d answer the phone. I will miss her effervescence. Rest in peace dear Mary Ann. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

I am so sorry to hear of Mary Ann´s passing. My mother was her cousin and as I live in NY and am in theater she sought me out and we developed our own relationship over the last 35 years. She came to see me on Broadway and she came to see the high school productions I directed and was equally enthusiastic for each. She was a real theater lover and supporter. She was on the board of The Signature Theater and a true champion of all their great work. I will miss our phone conversations which usually began with her calling me and saying "it´s your favorite cousin!" When I answered the phone. Rest in peace dear Mary Ann. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
