It is with deep respect and sorrow that I honor the life and legacy of Maurice Sykes-an extraordinary educator, advocate, and leader whose impact shaped the field of early childhood education and the lives of so many, including my own.
Maurice didn´t just speak about leadership-he embodied it. His courage, clarity, and commitment to equity inspired me early in my career and gave me the confidence to lead boldly, with purpose and integrity. His presence in the field was both powerful and grounding, and his mentorship-direct and indirect-helped me see the kind of leader I aspired to be.
I regret not having reconnected with him in recent years. This loss leaves an undeniable void-not only in the field, but in the hearts of all who were moved by his work, his wisdom, and his unwavering dedication to children, families, and educators.
Rest in power, Maurice. Thank you for blazing the trail and reminding us all to "get in good trouble, necessary trouble." Your legacy lives on in each of us who continue the work you so fiercely championed our cause.

My heart is sadden, but my memories of Maurice always puts a smile on my face. Always the wise guy with the quickest witt I've ever seen. I know his family will find comfort in all the wonderful memories they've made.

I am truly grateful for having met Mr. Maurice Sykes in my career in Washington, DC. His zeal and unending dedication to ensuring that the education of young children requires the ultimate dedication to the use of practices which empower them to be creative, critical thinkers,
explorers, with a zest for finding joy and the value of each person who shares their world was intoxicating. His dedication to consistency to one´s best practices in early childhood education will always remain as my guide post as I continue to serve children. It was my honor to know you Mr. Sykes. Rest in peace. Shirley Hopkinson.

A true champion of Early Childhood in the District of Columbia. I can not express my gratitude of the countless trainings, conferences ( especially the annual School Readiness) and seminars which I and my colleagues benefited from. You will be missed. Thank you Maurice
