It was such an honor to sing in the choir at Gene's funeral today. I realized very quickly how I've missed singing with them. I was also reminded of how much he has touched my life. As his casket was wheeled out of the chapel it felt like the "smile" went out of the room with him. No doubt he had been there with us! Thank you, Gene, for teaching me to be a better mother, musician, teacher and friend. I'm forever grateful!

Please accept our deepest sympathy. Gene was a dear friend. He taught me private lessons as a beginner trumpet student in the fifth grade. Years later, we were at Peabody College, Nashville at the same time...he on his doctorate degree and I on the bachelors. He shared his baton with me on two concerts with the Mormon Choir of Washington, D.C. He directed half of the concert and I the other half. What an honor that was. One of the highlights of my music career. My wife and I are much better people for having known Gene and Betty. He was a dear friend and a true mentor. Regards to his family, Ron and Dee Johnston, Middletown, Va.

I have many happy memories of Gene and Betty and the kids during their time at Peabody, especially the period when my brother, Wally, and I practically lived with them. My sincere sympathy to all the family.

"We will now sing a hymn with Gene Morlan conducting and Francis Gould at the organ." I've heard that so many times in church over the years that it might as well be in the Bible. When I came back to visit after growing up and moving away from home I found many things that had changed, but Gene was always there leading the music, year after year, and decade after decade! I bet the bells of Heaven rang to welcome him, and that he was pretty eager to pick up a couple and join the choir.

We will remember Mr. Morlan as a wonderful father to all who entered his home. I always knew that I was welcome there and treated like one of the family. Prayers for the family as they mourn their loss, and rejoicing in the knowledge that he is joining his lovely wife in glory. With much love, Kimberly Komala

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your Dad and my congratulations on the wonderful life he lived and shared with all of you. I know yet again from the last six years on MENC's National Executive Board that he was still loved and respected by all his MENC family as well. Take care of each other and rejoice in Gene's life.
