Michael William Dolan, 73, of Alexandria, VA, passed away May 16, 2016, due to complications of amyloidosis, as a result of multiple myeloma. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery to be announced.Michael was born in Kansas City, MO on December 13, 1942 to William and Vivien Dolan. He grew up in Kansas and graduated in 1960 from Shawnee Mission North High School. Michael graduated with a BA in Chemistry/Political Science from the University of Kansas in 1964 and entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas as an Air Defense Artillery officer. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from George Washington University in 1969. He later earned a Masters in Taxation from Georgetown University. He worked in the Department of Justice as Deputy Assistant Attorney General, supervising a team that performed legal research for Congressional legislation until 1985 when he joined Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts. Returning to government service, he worked in the Administrative Offices of the Article III Judges Division. In 2003, he entered private practice representing veterans until he retired in 2007.Michael indulged his love of sailing with his boat, Puffin, and in 1976-1977 he sailed the Indian Ocean portion of a round the world sail with a group of friends.His children remained the most important part of his life and he enjoyed seeing them grow up to have families of their own.Michael was well liked by all who knew him and appreciated his sarcasm and wry humor. He is survived by his children, Matthew Dolan (Jenna) and Abigail Rubin (David) and grandchildren Sean and Lara Dolan, and Liam and Desmond Rubin.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society in his name at http://events.lls.org/pages/nca/mikedolan.
