Myles Maxfield Obituary



MAXFIELD MYLES MAXFIELD Myles Maxfield, a retired CIA analyst died Friday, December 21, 2007, in Grantsville, MD. Dr. Maxfield began to serve at the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 as analyst of selected medical problems including epidemiology and molecular biophysics. During his career he progressed from medical analyst to become division chief of his own program with emphasis on preparation of finished intelligence in medicine and scientific research. In 1970, Dr. Maxfield received the Certificate of Commendation, Office of Scientific Intelligence. In 1974, he received the Intelligence Medal. Dr. Maxfield was born on August 5, 1921, in Portland, ME, but grew up in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Harvard in 1942, and received his Medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1945. He served in the Naval Medical Corps from 1945-1947 at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, MD. In 1950, he received a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, remaining at MIT as Research Assistant (1950-1952) and Assistant Professor in the Biology Department from 1952-1956. From 1956-1959 he was an Associate Scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY. From 1959 to 1961 Dr. Maxfield was Division Chief of Bio-Medical Research at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. During the years 1961-1966 he was Professor and Director of Biophysics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth “Betsy” (Brown) Maxfield, his four children, Myles Maxfield, Jr., Falls Church, VA; MacRae Maxfield, Teaneck, NJ; Nancy (Maxfield) Salmon, LaVale, MD; Dana Maxfield of Baton Rouge, LA and eight grandchildren. Private funeral services were held at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, MD. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Hospice of Garrett County, P.O. Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.
