Nancy Whorton George, 59, former Alexandria, VA resident, died on Saturday, January 25, 2003 from complications after extended treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the Mayo Hospital. Mrs. George, a long time Washington, DC tax and energy attorney, was at the time of her retirement last year, Vice President, Government Relations for El Paso Energy Corporation. Earlier in her career, she worked in public relations in New York City, and in Congressional Staff positions before starting her own law and lobbying firm, where she represented a range of Fortune 500 corporations in the natural resources, transportation, food, insurance and manufacturing industries. President Ronald Reagan appointed her to serve on the Advisory Committee of Federal Assistance for Alternative Fuels Demonstration Facilities. She also served on the National Advisory Board for Conservation and Extension with the Department of Energy. She was active in the Tax Coalition, Business Government Relations Council, the Carlton Club and Race for the Cure.
Mrs. George was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and the U.S. Supreme Court. She was born in McAlester, OK, to Jody Clifford Whorton and Ada Marie Ayers Whorton and is survived by her husband, W. Peyton George; her son, Richard P. George; daughter-in-law, Elena George and granddaughter, Victoria Evelyn George of Herndon, VA; her mother, Ada Whorton Johnston; her sister, Betty Sue Crawford of McAlester, OK and her brother, J.C. Whorton of Morrison, CO, along with numerous nieceds and nephews.
Memorial services will be held in Norman, OK on Saturday, February 1 and in Alexandria, VA on Saturday, February 8. Interment is planned at Arlington National Cemetery.

I remember Nancy's huge smile and equally huge, bubbly personality. I always loved being with Nancy. She graduated from Haywood and I graduated from Stuart.
