Nancy McManus Obituary

McManus

Nancy Lucisano McManus (Age 75)

Of Bethesda, passed away August 30, 2022 of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Born April 3, 1947, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Frank and Barbara (Yancey) Lucisano, Nancy spent most of her early years in West Orange, New Jersey. A 1968 graduate of Dunbarton College of Holy Cross in Washington, DC, she remained in the Washington area and later received a Master of Library Sciences degree from Catholic University. Her first marriage to the late John Carmichael ended in divorce.

Nancy met her husband, Robert J. McManus (whom she called "Mac"), on a blind date in 1977 and they married in January, 1979. In addition to Mac, Nancy is survived by: her devoted daughter Lillian F. ("Lily") McManus of Washington, DC, her stepson John D. McManus of New York City, her brother Joseph (Jennifer) Lucisano of Houston, her sister Susan Green of San Diego, and her nieces and nephews Amelia (Lucas) Lucisano, Anthony (Jaqueline) Lucisano, Dominic (Kelsey) Lucisano and Jack and Connor Green. She is predeceased by her younger daughter Katherine Jane ("Katie") McManus, who died as a passenger in a single-car accident on August 13, 2007, while working on St. John, USVI, after graduating from college..

Nancy worked for much of her adult life in the non-profit sector, in the early years with the Social Science Research Council and later the American Political Science Association. Most significantly, in the two decades preceding her retirement in 2012 she served as the National Administrator of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science college honor society, whose McManus Washington Intern Scholarships were named in her honor.

Nancy was first diagnosed in 2007, but mild chemotherapy and several bouts of spot radiation permitted her to lead a full life, virtually free of symptoms until this year. During this time, she was an avid tennis player and occasional scuba diver. She took particular pleasure in her travels with Mac on five continents, which included a tour of India (in which she held an abiding interest), the Galapagos, diving with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef, a spectacular African safari, plus numerous Caribbean and European jaunts (including a quick trip across the Strait of Messina to set foot in Calabria, source of her paternal roots).

Nancy's family and many friends will remember her as unfailingly graceful and gracious, socially adroit, smart and funny, as well as being a superb hostess and chef. Whenever her young daughters would complain about boredom or some other scourge of youth, Nancy would often encourage them to "go put some good into the world." That is what she did, every day of her admirable life.

A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society will be appreciated.

I was shocked when I read this obituary for dear Nancy. I worked under her at Social Science Research Council in the late 1970´s, when she was librarian, and I was an assistant. I would like you to know how much I admired her always. She and I sometimes shared a bran muffin for breakfast since we were both watching our figures. She brought in treats for the office but had great restraint.
She had graciously given my baby daughter some infant toys when I visited her home in 1995. She took them from storage and carefully washed them so they would be clean. They had been used by her own daughters, Lily or Katie, I believe. I attended her wedding to Mac McManus and reception afterwards. I can remember it very clearly.
Currently when I drive thru Bethesda, passing by Bradley Rd. I think of her. We had lost touch. This was my attempt to find her, and sadly when I looked up her name, I found this. I am full of nostalgia for the old days. I am so sorry that she and Mac lost their daughter Katie to an accident. Please know I am thinking of the family.
Sincerely,
Melanie Snyder Tatelman

Nancy and I enjoyed many wonderful moments together -- from fun antiquing at Gettysburg to delightful parties to profound discussions of Shakespeare, Greek classics, and other literature in three book clubs. She was a wonderful friend, and I feel fortunate to have been in her circle.

I love seeing Nancy's name on things I had posted on facebook. It turns up in memories at least once a week. She was so kind and thoughtful when my son died as I joined a club no one wants to join. I wish her family joy and comfort as they remember the good times and good things she did. Mary Ellen Brannigan Schattman

I had the pleasure of being in one of Nancy's book clubs. Her keen insight, intelligence, and appreciation of life - as portrayed in literature and from her own experience, enriched my understanding of our shared books, and my respect and admiration for her. It was a pleasure knowing Nancy.

Nancy was pure grace. As a young girl early in my career, Nancy mentored, amplified, and supported me with her warmth and intelligence. She encouraged me to stay curious and creative. Above all else, her motherhood inspired me. I am beyond lucky to have had the opportunity to have been in her orbit during such formative years of my life. Praying for the entire McManus family.

Dear Mac and Lily,

I am Libby Stanley´s sister. Whenever I came to visit Libby and my mother, I would always try to see Nancy. She was one of those special people who make the world a brighter, better place, who even made me, a virtual stranger, feel included in her warmth. I feel so lucky for the limited time I spent in her sunlight.

My heart goes out to you both, to the rest of her family, and to her many friends. We were all so very lucky.

Sincerely,
