NANDINI MURTHY Obituary

NANDINI MURTHY
On August 22, 2016 the world, a family, and two loving parents, Rangamani and Madhu, lost a bright light. Nandini Rathna Murthy, age 35, was a sister, daughter, and faithful friend to many. This fierce democrat''s fight against ovarian cancer ended peacefully in her birthplace and favorite city in the world, Washington, DC. Nandini''s life was filled with passions, from training her beloved Lincoln to be a therapy dog, to traveling with a backpack through Europe and Africa, to swiping her over worn library card. With her strong mindset and intense loyalty for those she considered family, she acted as leader, constantly bringing together those whom she loved. In lieu of flowers, her many siblings and parents have asked for donations to be made in her name to, National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. (www.nctdinc.org/contribute.php). Her boundless generosity, countless opinions, and ferocious loyalty have left cherished memories for many. Services private.

Dear Rangu & Madhu, I've been thinking of Nandini all month. She was my friend at first sight when I was 11. I would love to see you. I have been sick. Yet, her photo is on my mantel. You are in my heart always.

Nandini had a smile and laugh that lit up the room. Even at 5 years old, she was always the truest friend any kid could have. I was luck to have called her my friend all those years ago at Georgian Colonies. My deepest sympathies.

I had the pleasure of working with Nandini through our Junior League of Washington committee last year. I was so appreciative of her spirit and attitude throughout the Junior League year (even before I was aware of her illness), and I know I wasn't the only one who felt this way. She was the paragon of a great volunteer: dedicated and excited for the book festival and our kids health fair, and always willing to contribute ideas or lend an extra hand when needed. Working with someone like her brought joy to my volunteer work and made some of the more frustrating times better. I was deeply, deeply saddened to hear this news, and I'm so very sorry for your loss to her family and all those who knew and love her.

Nandini and I shared our love of dogs during therapy dog visits at NIH. Her visits with Lincoln made the patients light up and they all found comfort when they received Lincoln snuggles. For a few minutes, the adults and children had a chance to focus on something different from their own illness, little did anyone know that Nandini was also ailing. No one could fail to smile when Lincoln did a dance. Nandini changed many lives as she dedicated her healthy times to bringing joy to others. She will be missed.

I am so sad to learn of Nandini's death. My condolences to her parents, entire family and friends. Nandini was my student in the National Capital Therapy Dogs Therapy Dog Training Class. She and Lincoln were a joy to work with and a wonderful team. I can still visualize them in class. They brought cheer and love to so many people while visiting the National Institutes of Health and the Village at Rockville. We all miss her very much.

As a former teacher of Nandini's at Sandy Spring Friends School, I was so saddened and surprised to learn of her passing. Nandini left an indelible mark in my life. Back then, as a young teacher trying to find his way in a new school and new state, Nandini was a ray of sunshine whose joie de vivre helped validate my career path. To this day, I feel indebted to her and feel blessed to be a better teacher and person because of Nandini. May she rest in peace, and may family and friends come to find comfort in special memories and the loving legacy she leaves behind.

She was her Dad's princess and his pride. A real bubbly personality with a bewitching smile, she made our lives worth living. A great story teller who loved Washington D.C. U.S.A. Her guided tour of the city when we were in the city will forever live with me. Why does god take one so young and full of life. R.I.P. little flower.

Nandini, rest in peace. You have been a true leader, fighter, caring, and compassionate human being. You will continue to inspire a whole new generation that is fighting war on cancer.

To Rangamani and Madhu, please accept our deepest and heart-felt sympathies. May God give you strength and illuminate your path as you navigate tough days ahead.

Nandini was my first college roommate and my close friend of 17 years. We shared many things in common. We were both only children, avid readers and foodies that lived for a new restaurant! I am devastated by her death. However, I considered herself blessed to have been friends with such a beautiful, positive person. She will live on in my heart and memory always.

It is so hard to believe this...my students are always immortal in my mind. I will always remember Nandini for her amazing spirit and positive outlook. In class and or the volleyball court, she put her heart and soul into all that she did. I will never forget the match we played where we came so close to beating a tough team that we never beat and Nandini was in the zone, scoring on everything she touched. She broke her ankle trying to win that game! My condolences for your loss of the beautiful young woman who inspired us all.

Please except my condolences. May the God of Creation give you comfort and strength. I know Ms. Murthy will be deeply missed.

Nandini was one of my first real friends, ever. I had a difficult home life, and really never felt I fit in, but Nandini became one of my best friends when I started at Sandy Spring Friends School, all through our time there. Her loving, kind, generous parents were always so good to me too. I am deeply sorry for their loss. I have so many wonderful memories of Nandini. I could write a book. I wish i had been in touch with her more when I moved away, but I was so blessed to have some time with her when I came back to DC. I felt the same warmth, humor, and connection. She was beautiful, adorable, talented, hysterically funny, silly in the best way, smart, sweet, generous, genuine, adventurous, and so much fun. I will always love her. She will always be part of who I am. I will always miss her. I hope she knew how much I loved her, and appreciated her in my life. I was so lucky to have her as a friend. She could easily light up a room, or a whole house. Truly, I could say a thousand words, and it wouldn't be enough to say how special she was.
