I was friends with Brian at Patch Barracks and we shared some adventures together. Today I had the honor of welcoming 50 new U.S. Citizens. The first official act for new citizens after they take the Oath is to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Today, we dedicated our Pledge of Allegiance to the Memory and Honor of Brian and the service he gave to the United States of America.

While surfing social media this evening I remembered a guy I knew named Brian Danis. Trying to locate him I found this Obituary and Memorial. I am sorry to learn that he has passed away. We spent a few years as friends growing up on Patch Barracks in Stuttgart Germany. Both sons of Air Force officers we palled around in Scouts, school, hobbies and mischief. We ran into each other a few times later in life since we had both gone into service with the Army. Smart, funny and dedicated, rest in peace.

Danis was a good troop to me. A great RTO. He would periodically appear out of nowhere and visit with me for a few hours. I never was able to get his contact info, but he always seemed to be able to find me. I enjoyed our visits, and listening to his latest exploits and Library of Congress research. I last saw him in 2013 (I think), shortly after I retired. I have for years now expected him to just show up sometime. That won't happen anymore, and it saddens me some. I suppose it will be me coming to visit him next time, I hope. Till Valhalla!

Brian served in my Plt in Afghanistan in 2008, OEF, Task Force Phoenix VII; he was the consummate soldier. He once organized, through relief agencies, a walker device for a local child so that he could ambulate. I believe this was a life altering event for this child; we (the USA) made a positive impact that day. It was my honor to serve with him, I am glad to have known him. SFC ret. Brian, J. Bart Warren, and I arrived at A Co. 3/325 ABN INF on the same day. We were assigned to the same platoon, and formed a bond as the "cherries" of the platoon. Brian and I also shared something else in common. We were both the sons of Air Force Officers. He was a good friend and brother-in-arms. I have often thought of him over the years and shared my stories of him with my children. Rest in Peace Danis!

The Rouge Bouquet, By Joyce Kilmer: In a wood they call the Rouge Bouquet, There is a new-made grave to-day, Built by never a spade nor pick, Yet covered with earth ten metres thick. There lie many fighting men, Dead in their youthful prime, Never to laugh nor love again, Nor taste the Summertime. For Death came flying through the air, And stopped his flight at the dugout stair, Touched his prey and left them there, Clay to clay. He hid their bodies stealthily, In the soil of the land they fought to free, And fled away. Now over the grave abrupt and clear, Three volleys ring; And perhaps their brave young spirits hear, The bugle sing: Go to sleep! Go to sleep! Slumber well where the shell screamed and fell. Let your rifles rest on the muddy floor, You will not need them anymore. Danger's past; Now at last, Go to sleep!

An Ode to SFC Brian Danis
The Parting Glass
Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

I am sorry for your loss. I just found out through the Ranger community. Brian was one of my favorite dudes in Battalion, 30+ years ago. I frequently tell people about his white socks during inspection--it's one of my favorite short-timer stories. I'll keep on telling it, but I'll always feel the bittersweet edge when I tell it from now on.

To my Danis cousins: a tremendous ceremony and remembrance of Brian on Friday! You could not possibly had done better! I have scanned and uploaded a small photo I have of him in his Boy Scout uniform from the early 1970s' (just guessing on the date because nothing was written on the back). I hope to have more in the near future. I love you guys; keep his memory alive. Aaron

Dear Heavenly Father…
Please keep Brian extra close, oh Lord hear my prayer;
His heart was heavy with emotion – it was more than he could bear.
He accomplished much on this earth and perhaps Your will was completed;
From my small human perspective though, his life was abruptly ended.
Blurred by circumstances that make no sense and wishing I could have been near;
To say one more thing, or cast a smile, or hold him close and dear.
He touched my life in many ways and I know I am not alone;
Others share this sentiment deeply, our only solace – You called him home.
We saw You through him in all he does – his kind actions, thoughts and deeds;
He was a devoted servant, a loyal saint, a man on bended knee.
A protector of the weak, giver to the poor, respecter of elders, healer and more…
He led by example upholding the Cross and lived by the Golden Rule.
His motto – compassion – having empathy for people and animals alike;
Wanting always to help, extending a hand to all who needed Your Light.
He fought the good fight and finished the race being faithful to the end;
He served You well, and country too, along with family and friends.
He kept you close and he needs You now more than ever before;
Oh, please dear Father keep Brian extra close, he has passed through Your door.
Amen

Memories of you, my dear friend Brian, remain etched in my heart - forever. I miss you! I miss your smile and your laugh. I miss your kind and gentle ways. I miss your spontaneity and knowing you will not pop by for a visit just breaks my heart! The world is a better place because of you...and I am a better person for knowing you. You will always be my Knight in Shining Armor! May the Lord bless you and keep you; may His face shine upon you, be gracious unto you, and bring you peace.

I was a good friend of Brian's in high school and in my early 20s. Although much time has passed since we last saw each other, I still remember him fondly. He was truly unique with a great sense of humor, an appreciation of history, and a love of country. It's appropriate that he'll be buried at Arlington with America's finest.
