It is with great sadness to learn of Nelson's death and to know of the hole left in the hearts of each of his family members. Anyone who knew him saw an amazing father, husband, friend and mentor. He is now at peace and I like to think that Nelson is playing tennis and if you listen you can probably hear his laughter from the heavens...pain free physically and mentally. God Bless Nelson Aters and God Bless his family - I love you Pat. xxxx

We at Coney Island will all miss Nelson but maybe George can fix him a "Nelson dog" on the other side.

The Whaley Family (Wilhelmina, Tim, Terri, Jerry, JC and Nichole, Destiny and Faith) are saddened to learn of Mr. Nelson Alters passing. We pray for God's light to shine on his family and to give them peace at this time. Here is a poem found to be comforting at a time of sorrow in our lives:

I AM NOT THERE
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

I went to McKinley High School with Nelson and we share the same birthdate. I have only seen Nelson twice since he moved to Florida but have corresponded. He was a great friend and will be sorely missed.

Nelson was a great guy. I worked with him for ten years at #1 Fire Station. I admired him greatly. He will be dearly missed.
Please accept my condolences.

Although it is with great sadness to learn of Nelson's passing, it is also with great pleasure to recall the many fond memories of him.
"Cookie", an affectionate nickname earned eating cookies while watching matches from the sidelines, was part of a unique and wonderful era at the St Pete Tennis Center during the tennis boom years of the 60's & 70's and beyond.
Cookie always took a caring interest in junior tennis, even traveling to Columbus, Ohio & coaching the 1974 St Pete National City Team.
Nelson "Cookie" Aters was a friend of tennis, a friend to all tennis players, and I'm proud to say, a friend of mine. I will miss him.
