I went to high school with Nick at Hayfield Secondary, Class of 2000 in Army JROTC. I didn't know Nick very well but I was saddened to hear of his loss and visited his grave at ANC when I started work in Arlington, Virginia.
May his memory never die and to all the fallen during the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

One life, given in service to his country, has touched people you do not know. His sacrifice has impacted so many lives and the ripple effect only recently hit me. To Nick's family and friends I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for your sacrifice. You are not alone in your grief. He will not be forgotten. Semper Fi.

Nick and my son, Stephen were friends when they were young. He was always friendly, polite and just a plain good kid.
I've seen your vehicle with Nick's hero ribbon on the back and the "Nichlas" license plate. Made me sad all over again and I said prayer for him and his family.

To the family of Nick Rapavi,
Remembering you all this week as Nick's birthday nears. He was a good friend to my daughter Kelly Walsh and we have never forgotten him. Whenever we are in the DC area we make a point of visiting 2 places--Arlington National Cemetery where we know, unfortunately, several of our fallen heroes and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, where Kelly's brother Brian Walsh is honored (we lost Brian in 2010 in a line of duty death). We understand your loss like few others do and raise our voices often in prayer for you all. May God provide your family comfort as you continue to struggle with your loss--it may diminish but it never goes away. May our lives from this day forward always honor their memory.

Sometimes I can barely remember "those days" and I feel way older than I am. Then you pop into my head and it's like we're at the beach house again, going to play pool, or on the way to someone's 21st birthday party, and all I see is your beautiful smile.

Recently my son was visiting Arlington. On his first visit he sent a few names for me to look up so I could remember these people in a small way. “I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Rapavi Family,
I am the mom of one of Nick's friends from the Kingstowne area. I recall Nick being at my house with all the other seemingly endless teens that came and went when my daughter was at Hayfield! I miss those days but am so proud of the fine young adults they have all become. Our family was saddened to hear of the loss of Nick almost a year and a half ago and my daughter still talks of him from time to time. She will graduate from college in a few weeks and it will be with a tinge of sadness because we are mindful of Nick's great sacrifice and often wonder what he would have further accomplished if he were still with us--no doubt something fantastic! I was fortunate enough to be showing a friend the Women's Memorial at ANC a few weeks ago and thought I would pay my respects to Nick by visiting his gravesite while I was there. Not to my surprise, his gravesite was covered by flowers and other remembrances. I was glad to see that because it means he has not been forgotten, even though many of us have very busy lives. Please know you have raised a wonderful family and your sons will all continue to contribute to this nation in many, many ways. Being from a military family and being a veteran myself, I understand the sacrifices families make when their loved ones serve--there's none greater! Thanks again for the giving of your son Nick and please know that I remember you all often in my prayers. May God richly bless you and yours.

Thank you for everything you did for us. We are eternally grateful for your ultimate sacrifice, and only hope that we can show you how much you mean to us.

To Nick's Family,
It's been a year and about two months since we lost Rapavi. Nick had a huge impact on my life. I was his room mate in Camp Lejeune and worked under him for a bit right before the Iraq deployment. I have a goofy picture of me and Nick in between training events in California right above my desk to remind me what hard work is. Nick was a tough leader and sometimes difficult to work under because he expected the best at all times from us. I don't understand why it is always his best and brightest children that God decides to take from us, but perhaps it is so that we can all understand what a short time on this earth to make a difference for someone else. I knew Nick for just over 3 years and that was enough time for him. God Bless and Semper Fidelis Marine. Go Easy Bro, you earned it

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

All of the fallen from Virginia are true heroes. My sympathy goes out to this young man's family, friends, and fellow Marines. I was just going through the listing of those who died and were from Virginia when I noticed Cpl Rapavi's entry and saw that there was no picture. I've found one and sent it to Legacy.com for inclusion. Reading more about Nicholas, I saw that he must be remembered today with much sadness. He just seems so young to have died in action, but we all know better. The young are taking the worst in this war and we feel the grief of the families when we see another announcement.
Cpl. Rapavi truly exemplified what a Marine is all about. He was on his THIRD combat tour on his FIRST enlistment. He was going out ahead of his squad to see what danger might be waiting them when he was suddenly shot and killed by a waiting sniper. I belief he must have saved lives that day and many days before. My feeling is he was the type of leader who did not have to tell his men what to do, he just went on ahead of them to show them the way and to look out for danger. How good this was for his men and how sad that we lost such a heroic young man. My regret is that he could not come back here to Virginia to attend college, as he hoped to do after his Marine enlistment was over.

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

We just finished opening presents and were listening to NPR when we heard the piece on Nicholas. It took a second of listening and we suddenly realized who and what they were reporting about. We are so sorry for this ultimate loss. We can't imagine what it would be like to lose one of our children but just a couple of days ago we were reflecting how far the ripples reach, from each and every fallen soldier. Rely on each other and your collective strength will help you get through this and to stay strong. Remember that there are still many reasons to give thanks. Our thoughts are with you.

Cathy, Please except my deepest sympathy on the loss of your son, Nick. As a 2/8 mom, your loss is my loss and your sorrow is my sorrow and pain. He was a hero and brother to all of the 2/8. My son was in awe of him and he will be sorely missed. God Bless you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heart is heavy with sorry. I will not say for your lost, because he is not lost. He is in the arms of the Almighty. It has been an honor to know you and your family to watch your son grow into a young man; you can be very proud of. Over the years I've learned so much from you and him. Nicholas taught me the value of fighting for what you love. He valued his family very much and his country. His selfless act proved how he would put himself first before anyone would be harmed. That's a quality he was born with, and I'm learning to do. That's a quality only God gives to special people who can handle it. All in all Nicholas accomplished what he was meant to do here on this earth. That success was to teach people how to love, work hard, and do all you can do to help others. He did that quite well. He accomplished his assingment very well and I know you are very proud of him. I believe before he passed, God was preparing a place in heaven for him. The bible says "In my fathers house are many mansions, If were not so, I wouln't have told you so. I go (Jesus) and prepare a place for you, and If I go and prepare a place for you, I will recieve you unto myself. That were I am you would be there also."
His death is not in vain he accomplished God's plan for his life, and now he's home with God. Although it's painful now, but be assured we will see him again.

Dear Rapavi family
I am at a loss for words. My husband was Nick's corpsman (Doc) until this last deployment. Over the past couple of years Nick and my husband became very good friends and he looked up to him. I know that nothing that I say will make things better, but just know that my heart is broken. You should take solace in knowing that you raised an excellent son and young man. He will be forever missed and forever thought of. My prayers are with you.
Sincerely,
Doc's wife

It's hard to know what to say, except that many that you do not know are deeply saddened by the loss of Nicholas.
My brother is in Ramadi right now, though with 1/6 -- but I know they are all brothers and they all fight for each other.
May your brave son rest in peace, and may you and your family find peace.

To the Family of Cpl. Rapavi,
I would like to express to you my deepest condolences. I knew him through my husband, Cpl Bradford H Payne-2/8 Golf Co 2nd PLT. He spoke numerous times of him and he has visited our house as well. He has come over to eat my home cooked chow. I kind of know where you are coming from. I lost my husband on October 6, 2006. It has been almost two months and it still doesn't feel real...I hope it never does. I am leaning on God to help me through these very hard times and hopefully you may also find comfort with that.
I send my thoughts and prayers, Erin Payne and our expected son Gauge Payne

Dear Rapavi Family,
My son serves in 2/8. He said that if ever there was a Marine, Nick was the best Marine there could be. My son never gives faint praise. I wanted you to know that he expressed this about Nick.

While I wish I knew Nicholas enough to speak personally of him, I only know of the kind of person who has the generosity of spirit, and rare personal commitment to serve his country in time of war. I know that he had to be willing to go into danger for his brother and sister soldiers, and be willing to put himself on the line for others. My son Benjamin Schuster was killed by sniper fire in Ramadi Iraq on February 25th, 2006. I know who he was, and know it will never be all right. So I know how much shock and pain you see now. Let me assure you that Nicholas's sacrifice will never be taken for granted by so many of us, and he will always be esteemed for the truly generous and decent person he was and is.

To Nicholas's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

To the Family of Cpl. Nicholas P. Rapavi:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
