I am 82 years old. I was born on the wind swept prairies of Oklahoma to a family consisting of my father, Earl Lee Hughes, my mother, Marietta Newnam Hughes, my brother, Eldon Lee, my father's father, Zachariah Abner Hughes, my mother's father, Calvin Wallace Newnam, the day was April 12, 1923. Now, let's zoom to November 11, 1941, six months before Pearl Harbor...I met the love of my life, Benny Berard. I was a USO hostess employed by the War Department. My girlfriend and I went to a dance at the Bureau of Engraving, and that's where I met Benny. He asked me to dance and I never danced with anybody else from then on. I worked at the Pentagon during WWII until after VJ Day. Benny and I used to take walks down Constitution Avenue and visit museums for fun. We loved to spend time walking together, and he proposed marriage to me in front of the White House in Lafayette Park. We got married in 1943 on June 19 at the Bolling Field Chapel, Washington, DC. Benny went to Sea School in Portsmouth, Virginia and was later assigned to the newest battleship U.S.S. Iowa and subsequently was sent to the Pacific where he engaged in the two major Philipines sea battles, between 1942 and 1945. He was sent to Earl, New Jersey, to recruit and train an entire platoon of new Marines in preparation for the occupation of Japan. The explosion of the atomic bomb on Japan put an end to the War and Benny was discharged from active duty in December 1945. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University with a Masters Degree in Commercial Science and became a CPA in 1956 and practiced accounting in Virginia until the year 2000. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in 1993. We were married 62 years at the time of my beloved husband's death. And now today I am doing this on my son's computer...isn't this GGRREEAAATTTT! Benny would love to know that I am doing okay, living in Arlington near most of the family. Oh! by the way Benny, "we'll see..."love, earlene

The family has decided to have fun this weekend in your honor, pops. We know it's what you would want us to do. Ray and Cheryl are coming up, and Rick and Dorothy - they will be staying with us in Berryville. Joanne and her son will be coming too. The M'Taunts cant make it, but the Pensacola get together just means that much more. Hey Pops, say "hi" to Art and Paul for me, okay? Love, your son David. "Old Reliable."
