PAUL MENDELSOHN Obituary

Paul David Mendelsohn
Of Boynton Beach, Florida died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at the age of 72. Paul was born in Philadelphia to Sydney and Trudy Mendelsohn on April 18, 1948, and he grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1971, he married Helen Adoff Mendelsohn. Paul spent his 34-year career at Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Rockville and Baltimore, after which he continued to consult on disabilities and health insurance issues. Paul was an outgoing man who loved to travel and perform in plays and musicals. His booming voice announced his jovial presence, and his boisterous laugh was contagious. He always attended his nieces' and nephews' graduations, from nursery school to professional school, and was well known as their "Wonderful Favorite Uncle Paul." He was preceded in death by his wife Helen who lost her life to neurofibromatosis in 1994. Paul was a devoted husband throughout Helen's protracted illness, learning sign language when she lost her hearing as the disease progressed. He was a founding member of the NF Network and continued supporting NF charities for the rest of his life. He leaves behind his sister, Nina Mendelsohn Kowarski (David), his brothers, Bruce (Debbie) and Alan (Kathy) Mendelsohn, nephews Scott, Andrew, Daniel, Jonathan and nieces Rikki, Ilana, and Lisa, grandnieces and a grandnephew, and countless friends. The family will host a Zoom memorial on April 18, 2021. To send condolences and request Zoom details, please email [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the NF Network via their website (https://www.nfnetwork.org/).

Paul was one of the coolest cats I've ever known. He was very welcoming and wise, a tremendous influence.

I met Paul when was an active and outspoken member of Columbia Jewish Congregation and the Saturday morning Havurah service. We saw much less of him when he moved to Florida, though I saw him most recently at an event honoring Rabbi Martin Siegel when in only a few moments I felt connected to the Paul I knew. In our monthly poker games, Paul was always a strong presence, who often mediated between diverse political views. One felt his great warmth for all, one might say especially for those with whom who held views that diverged from his own. And, oh my, the variety and quantity of food at the nights he hosted at his home in Allview. Paul loved to make and eat good food and especially to share it with others. The poker was an excuse for us guys to get together, kibitz, share stories, get advice, gain support and connect. I miss Paul.

Paul was such a great supporter of NF. As an NF patient and parent of a daughter with NF, Paul was always a guiding light. The NF community will suffer a great loss. Our condolences to his family and friends.
