PETER CONTI Obituary

CONTI PETER LINO CONTI (Age 93) Peter L. Conti, of North Bethesda, MD passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2016 surrounded by his loving wife, children and other family members. He was a WWII veteran, and as an infantry officer in 1945, participated in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. Born in Manhattan, to Italian immigrant parents on June 19, 1923, his family moved to the Bronx when he was a young boy. He resided in the Bronx until transferred to Maryland in 1967, by his long-time employer W.R. Grace & Co. based in New York City. Around the family table Peter loved Italian food (especially a good slice of NY pizza) and a glass of wine. He was gifted with a sharp mind, always telling colorful stories of the past, fixing everything around the house, sharing his wealth of knowledge, keeping up with current events and enjoying time spent with his children and grandchildren (often through Skype). He was independent, hardworking and meticulous in everything he did. He loved going into his home office every day keeping up with his paperwork and working on his computer. He delighted in new technologies and was never without his iPad and iPhone. Peter was a devoted, adoring husband and a kind, caring, loving family man, and friend to many. Peter joined the Army in 1943. In the winter/spring of 1945, he was a 1st Lt., Infantry Unit Commander with the 45th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment. Breaking through the Siegfried Line and then crossing the Rhine River, he fought numerous front-line battles through Nuremburg, Aschaffenburg, Dachau, Munich, and other cities in southern Germany in the spring of '45. Among other medals he was awarded two Bronze Stars (oak leaf cluster), the Combat Infantry Badge and the European Theatre of Operations medal with two campaigns for the Rhineland and Central Europe. He served until 1946. He was recalled for active duty again in 1950, during the Korean War, as an Operations and Training Officer with the 4th Infantry Division in Germany for the build-up of NATO. He served in the reserves until 1952. Peter worked for W.R. & Grace and Co. and several of its subsidiaries beginning in 1952 and oversaw the financial operations of numerous divisions in North America and Latin America. Following his transfer to Maryland in 1967, he worked as CFO and Treasurer for Nuclear Fuels Services, Inc., subsidiary of Grace which sold to Getty Oil in 1969, and then later to Texaco in 1984, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. He continued as a financial consultant for NFS through 1989 and for small businesses through 1994. He earned his BBA at City College of New York, and an MBA at New York University. Preceded in death by his mother Colomba (nee Sartori), his father Joseph, and his brothers Victor and Anthony. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Birgitta; beloved children, Peter Jr. (Della), Pia Donhauser (Bob), Tom (Nancy), Christine Youngberg (Kris); grandchildren, Christopher, Kara (Jon Yates), Kirsten, Christina, Peter III and Ryan; cousins, Irene Sartori Luisa, Lida Bertolozzi and Annette Giuliano; nephews, Mikael Marcko, Joakim Marcko, Daniel Marcko; sister-in-law, Barbro Ljungberg, close family friend Kristina Svensson Dillon and numerous other family members.
