Peter Ellenbogen Obituary

Peter Edward Ellenbogen passed away on December 6, 2024, at his home in Washington, DC. He was 89.
Peter was born on April 9, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Archibald and Dorothy (Rothenberg) Ellenbogen. The family moved to Beckley, West Virginia when Peter was in elementary school. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, Peter attended William and Mary College, then went on to study architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy New York, graduating in 1958.
Following a brief stint in the U.S. army, Peter, and his first wife, Roseanne Druian, settled in the Washington D.C. area and raised three children. During his career as an architect, Peter worked for established firms, but later launched his own practice, (OKE), and other business ventures, which focused on energy saving systems. He mentored and befriended many young architects over the years, lending advice and support as they began their own careers. Peter was also involved in the early development of Reston, VA, one of the first post-war planned communities in the United States.
In 1999, Peter married his longtime partner, Michelle DeLeo, and together they split their time between Washington, DC and Paris, France. Over the course of more than 40 years together, Peter and Michelle traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Peter enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, listening to Charlie Byrd, attending theatre performances, discussing politics, and collecting antique tools. In his retirement, Peter became a novelist and wrote a series of fictional books whose protagonist, Boss Corbu, is an architect.
In addition to his beloved wife, Michelle, Peter is survived by his children Paul Ellenbogen (Jamie Stanesa), Charles Ellenbogen (Kirsten), Sheila My, and his former wife Rosanne. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Benjamin, Ayla, Zoe and Ezra. Memorial will be held at a later date.
