Mother Bickham embodied what it meant to be a phenomenal woman. In every sense, she was the epitome of grace and class. She was a beautiful soul with a joyful heart who loved and adored her family. She appreciated each of her children´s unique gifts and talents, always encouraging them with forthright wisdom, directness, and grace. Her sense of class and exquisite taste were evident in everything Mother Bickham did, especially in preparing the most memorable family Thanksgiving meals.
I loved Mrs. Phyllis Bickham dearly. She inspired me, as a Daughter-in-Love, to a higher level of womanhood-not only because of her impeccable taste and beauty, but because she set the bar as a true disciple of Christ, a servant, a loving mother, a loyal friend, a professional, and a lover of fine art. I will forever cherish her love and relationship with Deraunda and Miiko, her Grandchildren. Having lost my Mother at an early age, I remain deeply grateful for the relationship and influence Mother Bickham had on me as a young woman. During the annual signature Choir tour from Saint Joseph's Catholic Church Chair in Alexandria, Virginia, we also shared a special bond through service to the Saint Martin de Porres guild in Raleigh, NC. May Mother Bickham´s soul rest in peace and power.

Phyllis Bickham worked for Senior Services for many years, along with three other women, Allene Evans, Karen Duncker and Nancy Miller, who staffed the organization's Employment Services program. This program was created by city leaders to fight age discrimination and was one of the first non-profits to be organized for the purpose of also fighting race discrimination in employment. At that time, about 200 seniors a year were coming to Senior Services for employment assistance, from yard men to executives. These job seekers needed and wanted to supplement their income in order to age with dignity in this community. Other programs, like transportation were later developed to support seniors seeking employment.

Phyllis was a foundational member of those making these job matches for her clients. She had a reach into the community that the other women did not, a knowledge of the community that gave the organization direction.

She was treasured by all of those who worked with her because of her even temperament, her sense of humor and ability to laugh when her co-workers needed it. She provided support to everyone in the organization in many other ways as well.

Later, when she retired, Senior Services knew it couldn't let go of such a treasured resource so we pleaded with her to join the board of directors. Once again, she brought her special and unique experiences to the board, enabling the organization and its programs to serve their highest purpose in reaching those most in need. We didn´t do anything unless Phyllis approved.

What I remember most about her is how proud she was of her children. If there was ever a slow moment, maybe when we were eating lunch and we had time to talk about ourselves, we knew to ask her about her kids. She was a good listener and always wanted to hear what others had to say. The only way we could get her to talk about herself with any enthusiasm was to ask her what her children were up to. That's when she glowed.

These memories were shared by Susan Dawson, who was the Executive Director of Senior Services of Alexandria when Mrs. Bickham worked for the organization, and when she served on its Board of Directors. SSA is grateful to Mrs. Bickham for her devotion and support over the years, and for all her work to make Alexandria a better place for all older residents.

What an amazing Christian woman. I met Mrs. Bickham in 1985 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was always active in the church and truly embraced the corporal works of mercy. I loved spending time with her and getting to know her family. My condolences and prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul and God´s Devine mercy and comfort for the family.
