PLATON MANDROS Obituary

MANDROS PLATON NICK MANDROS Passed away peacefully on November 13, 2014 with his family by his side. This tragic loss is tempered by the lasting memory of a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and faithful brother. Platon succumbed to pancreatic cancer after a nearly five-year battle; he was 77 years old. Born in Stuebenville, Ohio to Frank and Mary Mandros, Platon grew up in Charleston West Virginia, graduating Charleston High School in 1955 and earning a degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon) in 1957. After graduation he worked in the patent department of Consolidated Coal Company and attended night law school at Duquesne University. Upon receiving a law degree from Duquesne, Platon completed a two-year military service at the US Army Material Command and then joined the law firm of Burns, Doane, Swecker and Mathis in 1963. During Platon's 32-year career as a patent attorney with Burns-Doane (latter to become part of Buchanan Ingersoll in 2005) he displayed an energy, charisma, and enthusiasm that inspired many. He was a strong and thoughtful mentor influencing the lives of co-workers and clients. Platon spearheaded the firm's expansion into Asia, representing some of Japan's largest technology companies such as Minolta, Mitsubishi Electric, Terumo, Aisin Seiki, and Fuji Film. Platon also was active in the Licensing Executives Society (LES) USA and Canada and became its president in 1989 to 1990. In 1999, he became president of LES International, the world's largest organization for technology transfer. Outside of work, Platon and his wife Anne were avid world travelers, experiencing the wonders of Asia (to include Papua New Guinea and India), Australia, Europe, South America, and Africa. Platon and Anne's multiple trips to African were highlighted by game safaris to Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Platon is survived by his wife Anne, son William, daughter Elizabeth, devoted sister Christine Wilson and husband Larry, brother-in-law Thomas Layne Kincheloe and his wife Marshall (who Platon regarded as his brother and sister), grandchildren Nick, Layne, Tomas, Tristan, and Eliza, nephew Larry Wilson, niece Fran Skeet and her children Adam and Ashley- he cherished them all. Platon was predeceased by his brother William Nick Mandros and his mother in-law and friend Elizabeth Layne Kincheloe. It was with great sadness when I learned in Copenhagen that Platon had passed away after his heroic battle against cancer. Yet he will truly live on through the stories and very fond memories I have of our time together at Burns, Doane. He taught me much about life and I missed working with him. My deepest condolences to Anne and Liz and the rest of his family. I will say Kaddish for him and know that his soul has found peace and is bound up in the bond of Life.
