I just heard the sad news that Ray had passed away. My condolences to Shirley and the Nathan family. Whenever I ran into Ray and Shirley I always left in a better place. Ray had a gentle smile and the way of a true gentleman. Some people just transmit a nice feeling. As someone mentioned in an earlier entry, Ray will truly live on in those of us who were fortunate enough to meet him.

My thoughts and prayers -- and those of my wife Liz, my brother Bob and my sister Susie -- are with the Nathan family as they mourn the loss, and celebrate the life, of a truly wonderful man.

Growing up, I had the privilege of being an unofficial member of the Nathan family, frequently spending as much time with my best friend Glenn at his house on Aylesboro as at my own on Fair Oaks Street. Among the favorite memories of my childhood is sitting around the kitchen table with Glenn and his dad, talking about things big and small while consuming inordinate quantites of food from a refrigerator that was always lovingly stocked to the brim by his mom, Shirley.

Even as children, Glenn and I knew how blessed we both were to have such remarkable parents. During those formative years, and in the decades since, I have always greatly admired Ray for his quiet strength and his unwavering devotion to his family. For good reason, Ray was enormously proud of his children and grandchildren; and they stand as testament to the loving father and role model he was.

When my brother Mead passed away 43 years ago, my mother taught us that "to live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." Like many people, I will forever treasure the memories I have of Ray, and he will always be alive in my heart.

Although we are unable to return to Pittsburgh in time for the memorial service today, we want Shirley, Glenn, Laura, Amy and the entire Nathan family to know that we will be there in spirit and that they have our deepest sympathies ...

Dear Shirley, I was with great sadness that I learned this morning of Ray's passing. He was a dear friend to my Melvin and always mentioned with warmth and love. Our husbands walked a difficult road. But if I'm not mistaken, they are rejoicing at their reunion. They are both in good company. Stay strong. You have my most sincere condolences.
