Richard Meade Obituary

Richard H. Meade, a veteran and lifelong public servant, passed away on May 16, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy Ziegler Meade. Born on March 8, 1943, in Paterson, New Jersey, Richard grew up in nearby Hawthorne and graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1961. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Thought and Civilization from George Washington University in 1965, an academic foundation that reflected his deep interest in history, culture, and the principles of American democracy.
In 1966, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Intelligence Agency. His assignments took him to West Berlin, Germany, and later to Viet Nam, where he served with distinction. During their marriage, Richard and Judy lived in Berlin, New Carrollton, Takoma Park and Fort Washington, Maryland. Through the years, Judy and Richard enjoyed travelling across the country and around the world.
Following his military service, Richard built a career in civil service, working entirely in intelligence roles for the U.S. Customs Service, where he played a critical part in the nation's drug interdiction efforts. His commitment to safeguarding the country's borders and supporting public safety spanned decades and reflected both his sense of duty and his quiet resolve.
Aviation was Richard's passion. He made his first solo flight at age 16. He owned and operated several airplanes over five decades. He maintained and flew them out of Maryland Airport near Pomonkey, where he enjoyed the comradery of his fellow pilots. An avid reader, Richard devoured popular fiction. He also collected volumes of military literature and donated them to specialized libraries. Richard was a dedicated runner and ran many miles daily in all kinds of weather and wherever he happened to be. His culinary skills were enjoyed by family and friends.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Helen Dougherty Meade and Richard L. Meade, and by his brother, David H. Meade. He is survived by niece Tori Hinton, nephew Todd Ziegler; brother-in-law Bruce Ziegler and by his much-loved great nieces Avelina Ziegler, Genevieve Ziegler, Eden Henton, and his very favorite nephew Shepherd Henton. He will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his country, his sharp intellect, and his unassuming integrity.
A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's memory to Montgomery Hospice and Prince George's Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850.

Brother pilot Dick has gone west. Wish I'd had the chance to fly with him, but I will always be grateful to have had him as a friend. He was a giver, without expectations.
Clear skies & tailwinds, Dick.
