Died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, after an extended illness. Born July 7, 1928, in Washington, DC, he graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, VA. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and later completed a M.S. in City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After serving as a communications officer with the United States Air Force, Mr. Anderson became a civil engineer, planner and later Chief Planning Officer for Arlington County, VA. For much of his long career, he served as Managing Partner of City Planning and Architectural Associates in Chapel Hill, NC, where he directed studies in all phases of the urban planning and development process. Notable projects included preparation of the development plan for the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, the Historic Preservation Plan for the city of Charleston, SC and consultation on a study of the visual assets of East Central Florida, in the vicinity of Cape Canaveral, during the boom years of the space program.
He is survived by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Ashe; brother, William G. Anderson; his wife, Mary Fernandez de Castro; four sons, Robert N. Anderson, III, Bryan S. Anderson, John R. Anderson and Bruce F. Anderson; two daughters, Susan C. Anderson and Amelia A. Wright; five stepchildren, Maria Fernandez de Castro, Scott Fernandez de Castro, Miguel Fernandez de Castro, Clyde Fernandez de Castro and Jonathan Fernandez de Castro; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 218 Pittsboro St., Chapel Hill, NC. On Monday, February 17, there will be a visitation at 11 a.m. and a service at 12 Noon at the Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, VA, followed by interment at the Warrenton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Gift Fund, earmarked for alternative cancer research, in the name of the deceased. Send to the center's Office of Financial Management, 31 Center Dr., MSC 2182, Bldg. 31, Room 2B11, Bethesda, MD 20892-2182. Donations may also be made to the Department of City and Regional Planning, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3140; or to the Anchor Baptist Church, 6301 Old Orchid Dr., Wilmington, NC 28403.
