Robert Boyd Obituary

October 1, 1946 – January 16, 2024

Robert "Bob" Sloan Boyd of Alexandria, VA, aged 77, died at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Bob lived a robust life and decried boredom. He had an illustrious career with the Department of Defense as active military and as a civilian executive. In his retirement, he embraced every opportunity to deepen his skills, knowledge, and personal contributions to the pursuits he most enjoyed: bridge, philately, church, and charitable works. Bob was loved and revered in all his very active communities. He was an empathic soul who effortlessly added a shine to someone else's day with a pleasant word or deed. Bob affected countless lives with his kindness and generosity. Those who love Bob are grateful to have been blessed by his presence in their lives and will hold him in their hearts with love and deep reverence.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, David Morrison Boyd (April 19, 1922 – November 19, 1997) and Jeanne Sloan Boyd (September 4, 1922 – September 4, 2004), former wife Martha Ann Boyd (August 11, 1934 – August 13, 2018), and two daughters: Ellen Boyd (April 22, 1974 – October 18, 2019) and Amy Louise Jones (May 7, 1961 – July 21, 2022).

Bob is survived by his wife, Sigrid Papademetriou Boyd, daughter Chrissy Boyd Miller (Michael Miller); grandchildren Morgan Parr and Perry Boyd; great-grandchildren, Romey Parr and August Boyd Miller; Martha Ann's son Ben Jones, and Sigrid's children: Natalie Papademetriou (Becca Kallem) and Niko Papademetriou (Sara Papademetriou) and her grandson Luca Papademetriou; and mother of Bob's children and friend, Anne Baker. Bob is also survived by so many dear friends and loved ones, not listed here, but also not forgotten and always treasured.

Bob will be remembered on March 9, 2024, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew and St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Catholic Church, 402 E Monroe St., Alexandria, VA 22304, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. All who knew and loved Bob are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Bob will also be honored with a military graveside funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, the date pending but likely early 2025 (the current wait for interment is 12-15 months). Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1968 until he retired as a captain in 1977. Then, he committed to a civilian career with the U.S. Air Force. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his bravery and service in the Vietnam War.

If you feel compelled to make an offering in Bob's name, please consider one of the following ways to honor him. Take note of how Bob extended kindness and goodwill toward others. He spread kindness, like seeds, everywhere he went. These seeds would grow into beautiful bouquets of love and goodness. Think of Bob as you drop a seed of kindness upon somebody else: give food to a hungry person, hold open the door for somebody, or offer a helping hand to ease someone else's struggle. You are also welcome to remember Bob by donating to or becoming involved with one of the following charities/nonprofit organizations he lovingly supported:

I only met Bob once, on my way home to Atlanta , after visiting my sister in Baltimore. I stopped for a visit, and we had lunch together. Bob and I traded many emails about WW1stereoviews for several years. Bob sent me a digital copy of his stereoview collection, which was instrumental in turning me into an amature photo historian, specializing in WW1 stereoviews.

I am heartbroken to just hear of Bob's passing into eternal life. He was many things to me --- boss, leader, mentor and friend. He also attended my retirement from government service in 2021 - and I will miss him terribly. He was a giant of a man, combining selfless service to the Nation, incredible intellect and a passion to help others grow. We sipped many a scotch together as he passed on words of wit and wisdom.

Sigrid - please do let me know when the service at Arlington will be - as if at all possible, I'd like to attend.

May he rest in the arms of Jesus....

I am sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I got to know him by email, as we shared in interest in WW1 stereoviews. A few years ago, he gave me a box full of stereoviews and stereoscopes, I treasure that gift very much.

Bob, I will always remember your great hugs and your smile at church, St. Margaret´s on the Hill. I regret I didn´t take the convertible ride in your corvette while I had the chance. I had so much respect for you and I rejoice that you are with our Saviour, Jesus Christ, enjoying eternity with him. I will see you when I get there.

I so enjoyed and valued my time with Bob. We are Boyd cousins and shared a love for our ancestors and history at Boyds Mills. He researched and wrote about our Boyd ancestry and his articles live on into posterity. His generosity honors the Boyd legacy and "place" through the Highlights Foundation which holds its writers workshops at Boyds Mills. I will miss him greatly. Our condolences to all of his family and especially Chrissy.
