ROBERT BURRELL Obituary


BURRELL ROBERT E. BURRELL Capt. US Navy (Ret.) Passed away peacefully at home, in Arlington, VA, on Friday, April 10, 2015. He was born, January 15, 1922, to John and Effie Burrell in Alliance, Ohio. He is predeceased by his wife, Harriet; daughter, Laura (a talented artist); granddaughter, Heather; brothers, Jack and Jim, and sister Margaret. He is survived by his daughter, Lydia L. Burrell, M.D. Bob had an idyllic childhood in Ohio and graduated from Alliance High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Shortly after graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy and started training as an aviator. He attended the Naval Aviation School, U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. He then went on to MIT where he graduated with a Master of Science degree also in Aeronautical Engineering. He completed Naval War College after leaving the Joint Staff of the North American Air Defense Command where he received the Air Force Commendation. He was a Commanding Officer of Squadron 19 of the Pacific Fleet. He was decorated with the American Theater, WWII Victory, Korean, China, and Vietnam Service Medals, and the United Nations Service Medal. He moved to Virginia in 1965 where he finished his military career in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon. After retirement from the Navy, he had a successful career as a consultant in International Maritime Aviation and Antisubmarine Warfare. Capt. Burrell was a longtime member of the Navy League and the Association of Naval Aviation. The love, guidance and support he provided to his family were without limits. A life well lived, he will be remembered for his kindness, grace and good humor; a love for his children, his country, classic cars, the stock market, traveling, art and poetry and for his ever present and infectious sense of optimism. He will be missed by all who knew him. Dear Lydia,
Ed and I and Janet and Rick were so sorry to learn
of your father's death. We are Karen McEvoy's sisters. Your father showed great kindness in attending our father's funeral and we remember that, even though we didn't know him personally. Know that we are thinking of you and
