ROBERT DOYLE Obituary

DOYLE ROBERT WILLIAM DOYLE, JR., Esq. "Bob" The only son in a family of seven children, Robert William Doyle, Jr., was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 22, 1947. He passed away unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack on May 18, 2014. His parents were Robert, Sr., and Jeanne Quinn Doyle. The family subsequently moved to Harrisburg, PA, moving back to Philadelphia some years later where Bob graduated from North Catholic High School. All of his degrees were earned at Temple University where he graduated with a B.S. in economics followed by a M.A. in economics from its Graduate School of Business, and a Juris Doctorate from the law school. Bob was a supporter of Temple for the remainder of his life. He was president of the local Temple Law Alumni Club at the time of his death. Bob was an antitrust expert. He served as a lawyer for the Federal Trade Commission for more than 20 years, becoming the Deputy Assistant Director of the Bureau of Competition. In 1997, Bob was featured in the cover story of The American Lawyer. He left the FTC to go into private practice, ultimately organizing his own firm, Doyle, Barlow & Mazard PLLC. At DBM, he focused on all aspects of antitrust and trade regulation law. Bob was licensed to practice in the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania. It was at the FTC that Bob met his wife, Debra Long, also a lawyer. The two were married before an intimate gathering of family and friends on June 22, 1985, in the home that he loved on East Capitol Street. Through the years the couple hosted many gatherings for family and friends. Bob was a welcoming host. Bob and Debra were blessed with three beautiful children, Michaela Marie, Benjamin Gabriel, and Skyler Gabrielle. While Ben's life was much too brief, his spirit remained in Bob's heart forever. Bob Doyle was a passionate student of history, evidenced by his extensive collection of history books. He unsuccessfully tried to pass on that passion by taking the family on excursions to historic battlefields. He tried his hand at boating and enjoyed hosting friends and family on his boat. Bob is survived by Debra, Skyler (now a student at Wesleyan University), and Michaela and her new husband, Craig Murphy, who currently live in Germany. In addition he leaves his sisters Jeanne Campagna, Huntingdon Valley, PA; Karen Doyle, SSJ, Cohasset, MA; Clare Doyle, Philadelphia, PA; Denise Sprandio (John), Philadelphia, PA; Beth Anne Patterson (David), West Hurley, NY; and Tracey Tillger, Doylestown, PA; mother-in-law, Virginia Hickerson Long, Ronda, NC; and brother-in-law, Charles Long (Cathy), Odenton, MD; along with 19 nieces and nephews and six grand nieces and nephews. Bob was an open and generous man. At the time of Bob's death, his family chose to help others through tissue donation. It would be an honor to the family if you would consider registering to be an organ and tissue donor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the "Robert Doyle Scholarship Fund" supporting law students enrolled in the DC Scholar Law & Public Policy Program at Bob's beloved alma mater Temple University Beasley School of Law, Office of Development & Alumni Affairs, 1719 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122. The viewing and the funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 28 at Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ, 4704 13th Street, NW Washington, DC. The viewing will be at 9 a.m., and the service will start at 11 a.m. The viewing and the funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 28 at Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ, 4704 13th Street, NW Washington, DC. Debra and Family: I send my deepest regrets. I met Bob at FTC 40+ years ago. He truly was an inspiration to all he came in contact with. RIP Bob.

I am so sorry I could not come to the funeral for Bob today. I met Bob at the FTC many years ago and have stayed in touch professionally ever since. Recently, I had a chance to talk to Bob for awhile at one of the parties for the ABA Antitrust Section Spring Meeting this past April. He was so proud of his family and caught me up to date on what his daughters were doing. I looked up to Bob as a lawyer and a person, and I am so sorry for your loss. The antitrust community has lost one of our brightest stars, and the world has lost a smart, funny, giving man.

Dear Debra, Sky and Michaela,
We will always treasure our memories of Bob. The first time I met him, I was dropping Susannah off and was just going to introduce myself and be on my way. Instead, I was there for an hour or two, sitting at the kitchen table with both of you, being regaled with stories from Bob. He was always so warm, humorous, generous, and down to earth, and his love for his family was obvious to anyone who spent time with him. We will miss him. Our hearts go out to you at this terribly difficult time.

Debra,

My sincere condolences to you and your family. The last time I saw Bob was at my grandmother Mimi's funeral. He was a very kind and warm-hearted to me in my time of sorrow. While we didn't see much of your family I always thought it was cool that you had a daughter named Michaela right around the same time I (Michaela) was born. I am sorry to hear this news and wish I could be there to attend. God bless you and your family. ~Michaela

Debra & Family,
My sincere condolences and prayers are with you in this time of profound loss. Besides being a trusted friend and mentor, Bob always offered the priceless gifts of wit and laughter -- and I'll always fondly remember those wide-ranging, informative, joke-laced discussions in his office, where the door always stood open. He'll of course be sorely missed.

Bob was a good friend to my family for many years. We shared many experiences, from joyful to tragic. Bob was a gracious and gregarious host. He loved his children and loved Debra to whom he was married for almost 29 years. I will remember our times on the boat, our Christmases, birthday parties, and graduation celebrations. We had such a good time that last Christmas with Bob in his chef's jacket! Bob provided well for his family. He loved history and has the collection of books to provide it. Rock on, Bob Doyle! Bobby, Bettie, Rudy, and Sidra all join me in these words.
