ROBERT HANKEY Obituary


ROBERT GORDON HANKEY  
Died peacefully in his home on Sunday December 23, 2012 in Wellfleet, MA.  Born in Gilbertsville, NY, Robert served as a Navy photographer during the Korean War. He was a long-time resident of McLean, VA, while working as a federal employee in Washington, DC and as an agent with Sunlife of Canada. He was an active member of St Thomas Episcopal church and of the Kiwanis club. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Wren Lee while living on Bellview Rd in McLean.  He later retired to Wellfleet, MA where he was active in town government for over 30 years. He was devoted to the preservation of open space and the environment. He was a founding trustee and President of the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, a founding member of the Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, and a founding member of the Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Robert spearheaded the effort to create the Wellfleet Harbor Area of Critical Environmental Concern. In 2012, He was honored to serve as the Grand Marshal of the town's Fourth of July parade. He was survived by his long time companion Eleanor Stefanie of the Colony of Wellfleet and his children Rob Hankey, Jane Longer beam, Wren Tremaine, and Hank Tremaine.  A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring/summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, PO Box 84, Wellfleet, MA 02667.
