Robert Singleton Obituary

December 27, 1955 – April 7, 2025
Robert Broaddus Singleton—known to all as Beau—passed away on April 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after bravely facing health challenges. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, integrity, and generous spirit.

Beau was born on December 27, 1955, to Arthur L. (Pete) Singleton and Janice P. Horner, and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. He attended T.C. Williams High School before earning a degree in Police Science from Northern Virginia Community College in 1979. In 1984, he married the love of his life, Judi. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two daughters, Kaya and Katie. Of all his accomplishments, Beau cherished being a husband and father.

Beau began his career with the Metropolitan Police Department before serving as a private investigator for government agencies, including the U.S. Departments of the Interior and Defense. In 1986, he joined the United States Capitol Police where he served for over two decades, helping to found the Mountain Bike Patrol Unit and co-authoring its training manual, which was adopted nationwide.

After his promotion to Detective (Special Agent), Beau served in the Dignitary Protection Division (DPD) protecting Congressional leadership, including House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Speakers Newt Gingrich and Dennis Hastert, and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.

Beau received numerous commendations for exemplary service. On September 11, 2001, he played a pivotal role in evacuating the Speaker of the House from the Capitol during one of the nation's darkest hours. His career took him across the country, leading security operations at major events, including Presidential Inaugurations, State of the Union Addresses, and visits by foreign heads of state.

In retirement, Beau served as lead bailiff at his local courthouse for several years, volunteered on sheriff campaigns, remained active in politics, and was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Known for his magnetic personality, Beau lived life on his own terms. A devoted Steelers fan, he also had a passion for collecting political memorabilia and police badges from departments across the country.

He leaves behind his loving wife of over 40 years, Judi; his daughters, Kaya and Katie; his brothers, Bruce and David; his sister, Elizabeth; and a large circle of family, friends, and fellow officers.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made
in Beau's name to benefit the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at NRH.

Beau as I knew him was great person. I´ve known him for many years now, and occasionally would bump into him, and we would always have a friendly conversation about current events. I always valued his perspective on things and carried to them forward. He hated what the system had become having seen it too from the inside out. He will be missed by many and I will think of him fondly and often.
